Taz 1200 or Urban 800 FC
    Hey guys/gals,

I have a Urban 550 that I am looking to retire from main use soon and keep it in my bag as a backup for me or someone else. This light will be used 90% of the time commuting and will be mounted lower at the fork crown and never on a helmet. Just seeing how people are liking their Urban or Taz.

~500 lumens, IME, seems to be pretty ideal for commute headlight use. I'm not sure I'd want more unless my commutes included stretches of mtb trails.

Sure at max on my 550 that is great but at 1.5 hours not ideal. The taz would be 300 lumens on low and the 800 is 175 on low and I believe 300 on medium.

I get that, which is why I like my remote battery setup. Lots more runtime, especially on flash.

One of these days, I'll be going dynamo hub, though, so I can avoid questions about battery runtime altogether.

if runtime is a bigger concern, I'd be looking at the one that gives me the highest runtime at the lighting level I wanted.

The Taz is a bit heavy for traditional crown mounting (that is, through a bridge hole), not sure how you are going about it.

That said, bigger battery, bigger weight, better run time, which do you prize more? The Urban light is okay, can't say anything bad about it, other than, "I wish the battery was bigger."

I'd say get a gloworm either 2 diode or the 3 diode and then a big batterypack. These have adjustable levels on all steps. I'm running the 3 diode xs i think and my lowest setting I use is about 800lumen, and very often I run at 1500 or max 2400 or so (on the road), you can never have too much lumens imo.

5-600 lumens or so is nothing, you can't go very fast with that.

I also have an older gemini olympia at 15-1600 or so. and its also very good. the gloworm is better though.

I once ran both the olympia and the xs on my bike and also a 800lm xera, it was awesome! but a bit heavy.

I have been using the 500 for about 4 years now. Light output is ideal, but my concern is also the 1.5 hour max. I was able to pick up an 800 from L&M at Sea Otter on the cheap, which seems like an ideal solution. Taz seems on the large side for a commute light, unless you have a unique ride.
