Swapping to flat bars... what to do with Sora 2x9? Go 1X?

I've got a 2x9 Sora drive-train with drop bars, with mechanical discs. I've only done about 200 miles on the bike, but plan to swap to flat bars for commuting.

To do so, I need new shifters which aren't all that cheap for what they are. My MTBs are 1x and I love it, so considering going with a cheaper MTB 1x drive train while I'm at it.

I'm seeing Deore 6000 1x10 shifter, derailleur, chain and cassette for ~$120. That set, cheap brake levers, and a new front ring and I'd be in business. Even getting hydraulic brakes and reusing my rotors would be cheap.

Anyone done something similar? I suppose I could sell the near new Sora shifters, derailleur, cassette cheap too to offset costs.

Less range than a real 1x, and even with just a rear shifter I still need brake levers for the mechanical discs.

$25 for a rear shifter and $30ish for cheap levers. I'm going to do that for now.

Already ordered a $20 38t front chainring to experiment with existing cassette range.

why are you all so anxious about a front derailleur? MG - it's not rocket science!

So...you are replacing the bars, bar-tape/grips, brake levers, shifters, chainring, derailleur and maybe chain, cassette, stem & hydro brakes. It sounds like you just bought the wrong bike.

I've got a 3x10 105 drop bar cockpit that I pulled off my cross check when I sold it with the original bar-end shifters. It has been sitting in my garage for a year.

Lol... Probably. I bought it for casual use at second house that I don't own anymore. Also putzing around with my 6 year olds these days and fat bike and FS are overkill and too nice to leave around.

Starting with the chainring and if I move fwd I'll buy levers and rear shifter.

I have plenty of bars, stems, grips, etc.

I use a 1x9 Shimano XT on my All-City Nature Boy with a 44t chainring and flat bars, pretty sweet setup, super versatile.

Stop asking how much it weighs and just go ride it.

Didn't realize mtb and road rears were compatible across Shimano until just now. I see road disc brake levers are not.

I'm using XT shifter and a XT derailleur with flat bars. I'm also using Long pull brake levers with BB7's.

Only up to 9 speed mtn shifters and to 10 speed road derailleurs (I think...)

You don't have any old school pre-V-brake mtb brake levers among your stash of old bars and grips? Okay, four finger levers are overkill but old Dia Compe SS-5 levers should work with your road disc calipers.

PS: I'm not sure why this is in the Commuting forum, seems like Drivetrain would be more appropriate...

Nope. No canti or road parts laying around. Haven't had them since 96ish and a teen.

I debated drivetrain forum. Probably went the wrong way, but appreciate the feedback.
