Rotary Pedestrian Fatality; Cyclist Pays $100 FIne

Another reason not to ride on the sidewalk
Valley News - Cyclist in Fatal Hanover Crash Pays Fine

There is a sidewalk around the roundabout that I bike through to get to work. I never use it, not because of pedestrians (there are almost none as it's far from town and the sidewalk only continues on 1 of the 3 connecting roads), but because it would require crossing where cars are exiting the rotary, right where people usually speed up. You would really have to stop and walk across; better to take the lane and merge into the roundabout like a car. This one is tight (small diameter to slow traffic) so a bike can actually get around it as fast or faster than most cars, especially if you don't have to stop before entering it. I do keep an eye on entering traffic to make sure they are going to yield to me.

Interesting admission. Official off-street bike infrastructure here always ends abruptly and almost always discharges to a sidewalk, not a roadway. Toronto has a similar ordinance based on age/wheel-size.

It seems to be the long-term goal is to make cyclists walk their bikes as much as absolutely possible.

Wow, a $100 fine for what sounds like at least a negligent homicide?!

    I'm flabbergasted...

I have also learned that the pedestrian was an avid cyclist in her younger days, and her granddaughter is a VT bikecommuter.

    So what?

If I shoot and kill somebody, and the victim was a gun nut, and his family are gun nuts, then I would get a pass?

^^No, just a small community here. Not going to comment on what the family is thinking.

At least in my town, the bar for that charge to stick seems pretty high.
