Regular (non-clip/clipless) shoes for commuting?

Going to begin a ten mile daily commute on my newly-acquired Pugsley. Need to upgrade the pedals, going to go with platforms.

I'm wondering what effect the platform pedals pins have on ordinary shoe wear. I ordinarily wear lightweight Ecco shoes all day, and don't want to somehow damage the soles on those.

What are you using for commuting footwear? I'm thinking of these:

I use pinned platform pedals in the winter and have never noticed any excess wear. Those are usually boots but I would think it would be fine. The bigger risk might be scuffing them or smudging them on the chainring. The tops of my bike shoes always get some wear to them. Although that includes mountain biking.

Thanks, that's helpful. I'm not worried about beating up the shoes that much, but figured I ought to have a pair just for commuting so that I don't have to worry about them. Have never had a bike with pedals that have pins, so I thought I'd check.

I use flats year round, I'll put some small tears in the rubber of my shoes over the course of time but walking definitely wears them out faster than riding.

I'm pretty happy with anything with a decently stiff sole, I can usually get something at a department store for $30 that works fine for commuting.

Thanks. I kind of like Ecco shoes, which fit me very well and seem to be nearly indestructible compared to cheaper shoes. But if they weren't nearly always available at 40-50% off, I might have second thoughts...

By all means this. It works and they do exactly what you say, wear out.
Me, I'm a fan of mini clips on old quill pedals.
So there WILL be a bit of wear in that area as well

I'm a big fan of platform pedals and my favorite shoes are Sambas, Vans Old Skools and Five Ten Ascents. I've used all of these shoes for commuting but also for big mileage days 100+ miles with no issues. I'm not a fan of shoes like Keens as they're just a little too big and bulky.

I use keen sandals or boots. Low hikers too, weather dependent.
