Paired Spokes Un-stoke: Sometimes it sucks to be right...

I bought a Trek Portland from a friend of mine back in December. Those who remember the model may also remember that it has 130mm disc wheels with 24 paired spokes each.

I think paired spokes are kind of dumb. I think low spoke counts are kind of dumb. I found some cracks at the drive-side spoke holes on the rear rim today.

    Uh-oh.

I pretty much know what I'm going to do. I'm going to order either the Velocity road disc hub, their road disc rear wheel, or maybe a whole set. And I'm going to deal with it.

But if anyone knows a cheaper but still reasonably good choice, I'd love to hear it.

i have lost count of how many cracked Bontrager rims with paired spokes I have seen. if you ride them, they crack. it's just a lousy idea.

Do you see a lot of failures with the fronts too?

i have worked at a few Trek dealers and I can't remember specifics of front/rear failure ratios. but i know i saw a lot of cracked Bonty rims. i don't think they make wheels with paired spokes at all anymore.
