New Bikecommuter Hit 3 Days After Adding Helmet

I read the "sun in my eyes" driver's excuse. Then I thought about driving into a rising or low morning sun. At a distance, if the cyclist was in a fairly direct line to the sun, wouldn't he be less so as the gap between pickup and cyclist closed? So was the driver driving all squinted up and not watching as he should? Or did he simply not know where the right side of his vehicle was? Or forgot he had a mirror hanging out there? (Both are pretty common in my observations.)

The other issue is that pickups are among the noisier of vehicles, so the cyclist who is sharing a lane (not taking it) isn't checking his mirror to make sure that overtaking traffic he hears isn't about to mirror him? It may be that being a novice he did not get enough close calls to educate himself. Also riding in a rising or setting sun is about the most dangerous road cycling we can do in my opinion. A really bright tail light might have helped.
