    Motorcycle Horn on a Bicycle
    Well... here's a fun one.

I've had this motorcycle horn sitting in my office for a LONG time. It was intended to go on a Cafe Racer motorcycle I built and sold a couple of years ago, and I never got a chance to use it.

Anyhow, I had the crackhead idea of connecting it to a Makita Drill battery and seeing if it would actually work - and *BOOYAH*, it did! The motorcycle horn is VERY loud, and hopefully doesn't suck up the battery like a car horn would.

The wiring was very, very simple using a bar mount push button. I do unplug it when not in use and I still have yet to see how long a charge will last. Below are pics of the push button and the mounted horn.

Played with the idea. They have some light weight car horns but they'd eat a battery fast.. You have neat execution.

I think an Airzound is louder and certainly lighter but bulkier. My real need usually arises so fast that a Drill Seargeant shout is faster than I can hit the horn button on the bike, or if I had been in a car, it's horn. In fact it stopped an idiot from pulling out into me broadside this morning. Open windows help get the HEY! heard.

If I rode MUP with people not obeying the rules so you had the lead in, it would be a neat alternative. In the neighborhood our streets are MUP's come to think on it, but with cars, too, and the bell is sufficient except for the earphone people. Too bad they are neighbors or I'd snaek up and....:nono: Then the Airzound works just fine.

About time! Welcome to the club!

I am still trying to find a relatively compact compressor/tank setup (12V) that can crank out 80PSI or so, as I have a set of Italian-made marine horns I would love to mount on my Surly Big Dummy cargobike. The bike presently has two overvolted (16V or so) Bosch horns (from a 1987 Volvo 740 turbo wagon) and they are PLENTY loud, but I would love to get the marine horns going. My Surly 1x1 has a single Japanese horn (running at 15.4V I think) and startles pedestrians plenty, but for sure the dual Bosch horns on the Big Dummy rattle the nerves of people in cars!

Dion, you bringing your setup to Bike Party this Friday?

My video absolutely does not do it justice. It is much louder that the AirZound

Brett: Yes. I'm really trying to keep my Friday night open from client meetings, but, as the wife says, "Money talks". :(

I haven't been to a BP in awhile, but so far, it's looking good.

Good to know its louder. The airzound is plenty loud for pedestrians but not enough for a lot of drivers.

I put triple Italian air horns (illiegal) in my MGB as 'eep-eep' at about 100 dB did not stop everybody and his brother trying to shove me into the guardrails. Lights on or no. Those horns paid for themselves many times over in accident avoidance that would have led to serious bodily injury. Like a bike, a dark British racing green MGB was forever being looked at but not seen. They moved to the Alfa, then to the Ford but I forgot to remove them when it was sold. :cryin:

To punch through the steel coccoons with stereos or phones to overcome, those air horns would be awesome. The horns I used might have been Fiamme and were light with red plastic trumpets but the pump was not. The current draw would be prodigious.

So a reservoir and a lower current, lighter and smaller capacity pump? Would a pair or 2 pair of 2 liter pop bottles be enough? A propane canister at higher pressure is a lot more weight.

Keep us posted on the marine horns. I had someone try to blow through a 4-way and I was half way through the intersection at the time.. They had slowed and thought that was adequate but did not look long enough to see the bike almost to them. Yeah.louder. Airhorns would be good.

Groovy, Dion! Don`t forget to update when you get some idea of battery life.
