Help me in my research to improve roadways and safety for cyclists

Hi my name is Cindy. I am a senior at the University of Oregon and writing a thesis on biker experiences and safety. I am hoping some of you may help me with my survey. It is completely anonymous and the answers received will not only be for my thesis but the information will also benefit colleagues, local bike associations, as well as many city officials. I am hoping my thesis and findings will result in solutions to improve our roadways creating a more fun and enjoyable biking experience for everyone.

The survey is very short. 17 questions and should only take about 10 minutes of your time. If you are able to share this with your biking friends and family, that would also be extremely appreciated. Thank you!

filled it out. Not sure what kinds of conclusions you expect to draw from all of those open-ended questions. You're going to wind up getting a bunch of responses that provide very little. I tried to be detailed in my responses to those questions, but it's going to be a challenge to make statistical inferences from those answers.

A good question would have been to ask what types of cycling facilities respondents use. Include options for (pictures would be useful for people to see what you mean by each):
    1. Roads with no cycling signage or markings
    2. Roads with "Share the Road" signs or similar
    3. Roads with signs and minimal paint (like sharrows).
    4. Roads with intermittent painted bike lanes
    5. Roads with continuous painted bike lanes
    6. Roads with painted bike lanes buffered from traffic
    7. Roads with protected bike lanes
    8. Sidewalks (~4ft wide)
    9. Sidepaths (~10ft wide)
    10. Greenway Trails/Paths (paved or crushed stone substrate)
    11. Dirt or gravel roads (wide enough for cars to pass side-by-side)
    12. Doubletrack (wide enough for a single car)
    13. Singletrack or wide singletrack

Followed by a question, "Of the above facilities that you use, where do you feel the safest riding your bike?"

Thanks for the suggestions Natehawk. I'll be sure to include some of your points in further additional questions to ask bikers in my indepth research. The open ended questions were purposely vague. I found that sometimes this allows people to open up about situations or stories than questions that are more direct and objective. Some really good insights have been found utilizing this method. I really thank you for your time to share your experience. And another thank you to everyone who has filled out the survey.
