    Google Maps "Bike There" Petition

I just learned about this and thought it is worth passing on. If you're on a computer, you've likely used mapquest, google maps, or yahoo maps to get directions at some point. None of these systems have available bike route maps.... yet.

There is a site called http://www.bikemetro.com/ that has a bike routing feature for OC and LA counties in So Cal. It's limited in the area covered and isn't 100% reliable (It's been down several times over the past few months).

There's a petition to add a "bike there" feature to google maps, being headed up by a group in Austin, Texas. They've also got some pics of Lance's new shop on their home page right now.

    http://googlemapsbikethere.org/

You can sign their petition, asking Google to add the bike-specific features, at:

    http://www.petitiononline.com/bikether/petition.html

From the site, it looks like the City of Austin is working with google to make it happen, but nothing concrete yet.

Currently i use mapmyride witch uses google api. But in my area the bike routes are not vary bike friendly. I take non-bike routes with better roads and less traffic.

I checked out http://www.bikemetro.com/ last night and its super cool, calculates cost savings, enviromental impact and exercise value of your commute! If google earth could do something like this for everyone that would be awesome.

i wonder what google is thinking about liability issues with this? it's slightly higher risk for them than driving directions because we're looking for safer routes specifically. while noone here might sue, some a$$hat out there would if hit by a car on a 'safe' route chosen by google.

i'm not knocking the idea, i'm #783 or 4 on the petition, but might as well get some dialogue going regarding potential problems and possible solutions.

I signed the petition, but I always used gmap-pedometer.com for routes. A little more work, but I have bike paths that don't show up on google maps anyway. Besides, gmaps can give you elevation changes, so I can make all my routes downhill!

I don't know how they could do this without allowing user-submitted content, and therefore, could probably get away from many liability issues with a standard disclaimer ("routes are not verified by Google and cyclists must use common sense to avoid... blah blah blah).

I hope it wouldn't be a road block.

On the other hand, I can think of a few routes around my area that I wouldn't want to unwittingly be routed through, whether due to the makeup of the neighborhood, or high & fast vehicle traffic, or crappy pavement conditions.

But think of the potential this could have!

In the first photo, in the lower left corner, is a pedestrian bridge that shaves a mile AND avoids heavy vehicle traffic on my commute.

In the second photo, though not a big time saver, is another feature I'd like to see: the ability to be routed through public plazas and open areas. (Would Google have to verify whether this is not private property before adding to their database?)
