    A good buzz

Ah, the soothing buzz of carbide studs on pavement.

First day out on new Nokian W106 yesterday. Amazing. The road leading from my house never really thaws due to areas that are always in shade from trees, so those parts are always packed ice.

The 106s never blinked. In the past, I've gotten over small patches with non-studded tires by riding gingerly, but I rode normally over them and they were as stable as can be. T

The downside is they are SLOW on pavement. I ride a SS cross bike and my summer gear was WAY too high. Easily fixed, but slower speeds are the reality so the gear inches must be adjusted accordingly. That will help when some snow hits as well.

Bottom line: The Nokians just transformed winter riding for me here in WI. I realize they won't perform miracles, but I have a lot of hills to deal with and I had no confidence to stop at the bottom of some of the hills with snow/ice on conventional tires.

I'll now be riding all winter long with snow < 3 inches or so.

Man I was wishing for some of those this morning. Freezing fog put a weird thin layer of ice on everything last night. Seriously tense commute. Studs would have made it a breeze.
You have no excuse for driving to work
(unless you don't have studded tires)
    (no excuse for that either)

Yeah, these are the ticket in those conditions. I see shiny patches that I can't avoid and now I don't worry them much.
