Funny Vid in Response to "Not Riding in Bike Lane" Ticket

Cyclist Argues Against Police Fine in Slapstick Cycle-Lane Video
Kat Hannaford Perhaps throwing a cyclists' yellow card on cars obstructing the bicycle lane would've been a less aggressive way to go about his complaint, but then we wouldn't get to see this cyclist, Casey Neistat, make such a fool of himself.

As the video intro explains, he received a $50 fine for not cycling in the bike lane. As Manhattan-dwellers know, there's been a debate brewing for some time now over the cycle lanes, and the police who ticket cyclists, so Neistat's video set out to show the world just how difficult it can be sticking to the rules.

I say "rules" instead of "laws," because contrary to the policeman filmed by Neistat, it's not actually illegal to cycle outside of the lanes. [Gothamist]

That's messed up, I'd love to see someone take this to the highest court possible (let's face it, probably not that high) to get this some publicity. Don't get me wrong, I understand someone getting ticketed for riding on a sidewalk, riding to endanger, etc, but this is BS.

    Funny vid.

Surprised he'd go out and crash in to stuff and not wear a helmet though.

I watched it this morning- that guy is pretty good at convincing himself to crash into all that stuff without ever wincing!

Related to the story I linked to yesterday in Commuter News thread about a woman who was killed here in my town. There`s a good chance the whole incedent would never have happened if she had been in the traffic lane rather than the bike lane.

So if your route home requires roads without bike lanes, you just have to walk? And if you don't pay these tickets will they put a boot on your bicycle?

More importantly, if I am a tax paying NYC resident who chooses cycling over motoring do I get a rebate for all of the roads I am paying to maintain that I can not access?

I wonder what happens if enough people start forcing judges to rule on their tickets.

In my few dealings with judges, I've found them to be quite reasonable, actually...

Funny video and very unfortunate. Common sense is all but lost now a days...

Mmm. Not me. $250 and 3 points on my driver's license (in Ohio if you get 5 points you're suspended) for making an "illegal u-turn" on my bike. There wasn't even heavy traffic at the time.

Maybe he had some stunt man training. Obviously had a decent vidographer for camera placement. Too bad the cruiser wasn't occupied. Can you imagine the converstaion?

    "You hurt?"

    "Only my pride."

    "Why'd you run into me?"

"The cruiser is blocking the bike lane."

    "So? Go around!"

"Can't. Against the rules up to a $130 fine. One of your guys wrote me up. So, is there a fine for blocking the path?"

"Would you like a 'failure to control" ticket?"

"Hmmm. Interesting. I will take that ticket IF you can ride my bike up and over your cruiser showing me I did not control as well as I should have and stay in the bike lane."

    "You've got to be kidding."

"Can't go around you, Can't go through you. Gotta go over you!"

"So you think this is a kid's game?"

"No. I'm also not the author of the idiotic ruling that I must ride in a bike lane. You might want to change the law as there are cyclists who can ride over cruisers parked in the bike lane."

"Is that a threat. No just a suggestion to not write the paper. Better all 'round."

    Normal day in NYC...

Might give a little perspective of how things are, in such a highly populated city. A New Yorker probably won't consider that really that bad at all. They consider the out of towers to be the worst. These guys have some of the most sharpened senses, I have to say, to consider all this normal and no big deal. I think this guy just got caught on a bad day after complaints about cyclists.

Already watched that vid when BikeRumor promo'd it, but watched it again just for the lulz. Still funny after a 3rd time too!

Just found this video and did a search before reposting. Thought I'd bring this back from the dead for those who have not seen the original video. It is hilarious, I don't know how he could crash into all those things.

I'm from Manila and traffic is probably as worse as in India, but I never saw local cyclists ride that way. Local bike commuters in fact are as inconspicuous and unnoticeable compared to the recreational/weekend warrior cyclist.
