    Floods are powerful. I once got to witness a flash flood in a typically dry wash in Utah from a safe vantage point. That was VISIBLY powerful. But the typical flood where I live now definitely isn't a flash flood. So the power of the floodwaters is extremely deceptive.

    This is the sort of hazard that should almost never be a risk around here based on the hydrology and geology of the area, maybe a 50 or 100-year storm event at most.

    Except we paved pretty much the entire upper watershed with parking lots and freeways, skimped on the SWM ponds, and let the old flood control structures collapse into hazard-creating in-stream barriers.

    Now we get a potentially deadly flood in the river valley areas almost every time it rains.

    No points for guessing where we decided to put our bike paths.

    Yeah, it's right beside that train track.
