Telluride is surrounded by national forest. Theres great camping off of fall creek road and at alta lakes(there is a nice pay site in town at town park). Theres no great bike shop in town. Paragon sports is probably the best

Sunshine campground is another possibility. It's located on highway 145 about 15 southwest of Telluride. It has a very nice view of Mt. Wilson (the Coors beer can?).

We ended up camping at Priest lake right by Trout lake on 145. Had a blast- the singletrack near alta lakes was killer. Some of the best I've ever ridden. Papa Smurf rules, and so did the never ending unmarked trail turnoff's. Then rode down the sunshine trail then back into town. Loved it!! Tons of great riding! Will definitely be back. A local was raving about the singletrack down near cortez and rico? ANy word on that?

The Cortez/Dolores area has lots of trails. Phil's World is great fun with 5 new miles added this past season. There is Bean Canyon area within a couple of miles of Dolores, Sage Hen near the McFee Res. and lots of trails up towards Rico and Stoner area on Haycamp Mesa.

The guys out of Kokopelli Bike shop in Cortez have put together a nice area map just last year. Don't forget to stop by the Dolores River Brewery, great pizza and microbrew!
