    West Mag 12/2

I understand our fearless leader, milehighmark, may not be available 12/2, so I am taking this into my own hands.
Anyone want to bundle up and meet at West Mag Tues 12/2 - main trailhead about 6:15 for an hour or 2?

Maybe, but I am SLAMMED with The Work™ this week. Also known as Teh Suck. Anycrap, where's the TH and I'll see if I can make it... I've never ridden West Mag so I have no clue as to it's whereabouts.
The older I get, the faster I was.

    Punch it, Chewie.

You've never ridden West Mag? Where have you been? Magnolia (dirt road) crosses the Peak to Peak hwy just south of Ned. Parking is on the West side.

It's a little of a haul from Golden.
Hiway 72 west to the end - where T's into 119.
119 North (a couple miles) to the trailhead on the left - a big dirt pullout.

With all the trees, the wind should be more manageable than at Marshall Mesa shouldn't it? I haven't ridden up there in the night or in the wind, so please correct me if I am wrong.

wellswheels, meet me at the corner of 93 and 72 at about 5:15-5:30?

Anyone else? Should be an experience.

Eh.. the trees will help a little, but much of West Mag is pretty directly exposed to the divide. It'll probably be better if you stay on the eastern slope of Tennessee Mnt (e.g. Schoolbus). It should die down a little by the evening, but if it's too brutal you can always go hit Dots instead.

I'll try to post an update tomorrow afternoon.

Let me rephrase that: as slow or slower than me.

I'm going to try and convince myself to go. Though I can't convince anyone else (Flyer, I'm talking to you!). I'm also down to a single light. Someone (Flyer) borrowed my other one.

Any idea what the temp will be like out there tonight?

It may actually be somewhat warm. It's almost 50 here now. I'd guess in the evening it'll be in the 30's and still damn windy.

I might be able to make it over.. if so, this will ensure the sweeper position is locked up for the climbs.

Here's trailhead directions for those not familiar.. but if your coming from Golden you may want to take the Hwy 72 route instead.

    Cool - should be fun!

Come on Scott - just bring a coat and some sweats. You can tough it out for an hour or 2!

    So how was the ride?

I'm bummed. Going to be too cold for me the rest of the week.

I want a Pugsley. That would convince me to ride more in the snow.

So, wellswheels and I met and drove together up to West Mag last night. Toomanytoyz met us too, but then after loading everything up in wellswheels truck, he discovered something that wouldn't allow him to ride with us, so he drove back home! (I'll let him explain, if he feels the need). I was just impressed he even acted like he was going to come at all, what with his aversion to cold weather.
We got to the TH, and were gearing up, and up rolled thump, which was a saving grace for us, because I don't think we could have followed the trail too well through the snow in the Blair Witch-ish trees,

and no doubt would have gotten lost and froze to death - need to take pointers from the cold weather simulated survival ride thread to heart. Thump had a good point though, just walk in a straight line, and you'll run into a road somewhere up there, and likely get yourself "unlost".
For my 2nd night ride in a row, it went from barely spitting at the start,

to really coming down at the middle/end.

We did a fair amount of hike-a-biking through some deepish drifts up the hills, and I am a little sore from a frozen snow packed 15 year old brakes not stopping me down a hill bail and crash.
But, once again, in the end, a good ride - basically TH->some sgltrak->Hobbit1->Hobbit2->road bypass to Hobbit3->Observatory->road back to TH - and good times.

Thanks for the guide and trail breaking thump! Be sure to post so I know you made it home!

Yep, I was there. All geared up and ready to ride. Minus my light. Funny enough, I realized a block from my house I had forgotten my batteries and went back to get them. Too bad my brain shut off about the light. Ugh.

    When's the next one?

Egads man! That camera needs to go.. thing adds like 30 pounds.

T'was actually a bit spooky hitting the trails home in the pitch black with 5 feet of visibility, but I got there despite the bears and kitties. I thought my headlamp battery was just about dead until I brushed a tree branch and realized the lens was just coated in snow.

Anyway.. certainly one of my more interesting spins around West Mag. Nice to meet ya and thanks for the ride.

This is from after trying to clean the bike off:
