TR - Exploring CO State Forest State Park

I posted a while back about scouting trails near Cameron Pass and in the Colorado State Forest State Park with the goal of maybe leading a big ride up there later this summer. I've hiked/skied/snowshoed a lot of the trails up there but not all those allow bikes. So yesterday I finally got up there with the mountain bike to begin exploring. My plan was to park Zimmerman Lake TH, ride up to Montgomery Pass and ride down into the State Park. Then I wanted to explore some of the trails that lead to lakes along the Rahwah Wilderness boundary.

Bottom line: there is definitely some nice singletrack up there, but I sampled only a small amount. It requires riding a lot of dirt roads and some old logging roads to connect them. I'm not sure if it's worth putting together a big group ride. I plan to try to get up there again in a couple weeks to scout a few more trails.

    Here are some pics.

The view up top. This is a good area for backcountry skiing.

The trail just disappeared, and I did a lot of wandering off trail to find my way down into the State Park. There is supposed to be a trail but I never found it.

Nice singletrack on my way up to Kelly Lake

Kelly Lake. The trail continues up and over the saddle shown. I wasn't willing to hike-a-bike up because I wasn't sure what the trail is like on the other side--could be meadows, could be a scree field. I'll try to approach it from Ruby Jewel lake next time.

Regardless, I still love a good tale or photo log of exploring areas that many do not reach.

The summer is too short... This is awesome. Thanks for scouting!

Ain't that the truth. It's already mid August!
