    No thanks, I'm full...

Went Saturday. Had a blast. Have to work Tues, or I might think about it. Do you know anything about the 'rest' of Rainbow Trail after it crosses 285?

Hey I went Saturday too! Took the 10am shuttle up. If you were on it, you would have noticed the freeriders

Saw a couple guys with pads, but they were on the 8:00. You might have passed us, though. Spent about 1-1/2 to 2 hrs making repairs and about the same piddling around, taking pictures, et c.,. We were the last vehicle left in the parking lot when we got down the hill.

Trip Report / Rainbow Trail Part II

Tuesday's trip to Monarch Crest Trail was, as expected, terrific. We had a very nice day and since it was a week day, there were only a few other bikers on the trail. The trail is completely dry and in great shape.

In respose to the questions about the second half of the Rainbow Trail (ie from the highway to Salida), I have never ridden it but have heard the following:

    1. It is popular with the motorcycle crowd so the trail is not is as good of shape for the MTBers.

    2. It is best done in the direction from Salida, rather than as an extension to the Monarch Crest Trail, as apparently there are a number of tough-to-clean loose and steep climbs that when coming from Salida are fun descents.

    3. According to some locals, who are lucky enough to have MCT as a training ride, and who have no trouble breathing while climbing at 11,000+ feet, the second half of the rainbow trail is akin to "a bridge too far", meaning every time they have done the whole thing it turns out to be just too long and somewhat of a grind.

    Cheers!

The "rainbow" from 285 into Salida absolutely makes the Monarch crest ride

awesome. it is the only "real" way to do this ride IMHO. It sure as hell beats riding back to the car on the road, makes the ride longer, is some sweet singletrack (have never seen a motorcycle on it), and is fun as hell. try it, you WILL agree.

It must've made a change for the better, then. I've done Monarch and crossed 285 and continued on and it was HARD. In the mid 90s, we used to camp off of 101 and get rides to the crest and then cross 285 and ride the Rainbow trail all the way back to camp. I'm a wee bit smarter now....

Sounds like some mixed reviews. I guess if we're feeling REAL froggy next time around, we'll jump. Thanks for the info.
