Late march, early april is usually a safe bet, but you may be snowed out of the higher shuttle routes. October is a great time as well.

I enjoy going in March, but there is some snow at the higher altitudes (8000+).

I have been there anytime from February to May and late September to early November. I'd say from late March to early May is the best time as is most of October. Just know the earlier in the spring you go you might run into snow/rain and the later you go it might get hot. Have fun!

The advantage of going in the Spring is that the sand pits are still packed down. The advantage of going in the Fall is that you don't have to worry about snow in the higher elevations (that is, unless you go too late). The advantage of braving the heat is you get longer days.

    All Winter long

In 2004 I lived in Steamboat Springs; 5 hours from Moab, and was disenchanted with winter sports, so I went to Moab every month that winter and absolutely loved it.

I was able to ride some rides that are unapproachable in the summer as they are so dry they become a beach with deep sand - Poison Spider, Gold Bar Rim; others that would be really hot - Pritchett Canyon to Kane Creek; and still others that would be jammed with tourons in the fall or spring - Porcupine Rim, Slickrock, etc.

The advantages were many; low, low motel rates, no crowds, no heatstroke, met many of the locals, was shown some secret goods that most visitors never see, and never got too hot, as in a 100 oz. Camelbak would sustain you on a long ride.

I highly recommend November through March in Moab.

march has always been my favorite...only just watch out for Jeep safari weekend (http://www.moab-utah.com/jeep/index.html). Weather will be grand but there will be a zillion other trail users out.

IF its your first trip, make it mid April. March can give you fits with weather and there may be snow at the higher elevations (and you'll want to ride at those elevations).

There are many hotels/motels there, look around and pick your brand. I usually camp on in sand flats (Slick rock area).

As for eats, there are many places in town that will fit your fancy, just hit the main strip and choose your food. Eddy McStiff's is a classic that you have to hit at least once in your life.

Moab Diner (good and cheap) or Jail House (good and pricey ) for breakfasts.

Watch out for: Jeep week (both sides of the week and weekends), and the 4 million other specialist activities that go on (Xterra, survivor, adventure races, marathons, car rally's, toyota week, etc...)
