As much as I don't want to give up my TDI manual wagon. My needs have changed and it's probably going to get replaced with a full size truck. I really wish I could get a GTI or a Gulf R. But I need something I can work out of.

Lowered my '15 GTI with the same springs... can't decide between hitch or roof rack but leaning toward hitch.
Thanks! Yes, I got the EcoHitch, works great, even lowered. I love the hitch rack over the roof rack, especially because there are no attachment point on the car, you would have to use one with the frame clamp style.

VW needs to crank up production on the GTI's, because there are a lot of people who will want one as a replacement after the dieselgate buy-backs happen. A four door with a nice roof rack, 1 1/4" hitch and a set of snow tires would be a great all around car for me.

Dude! Thats a beautiful car. I dont think my roof rack will fit it (its sold, btw). I would not install a roof rack on that car, you'll immediately feel the drag it creates, by itself. With a bike the drag is even worse. If thats my car, i'll go with an upright hitch tray or a seasucker single bike mount. A buddy of mine loves that bike tray...He drives a Nissan Z and he says no problems at all.

Really doubting your typical TDI owner burned by VW is going to look to buy another VW...and a less efficient one at that.

    My TDI

If/when VW buys back my car, I will be at a loss. Nothing else in that price range has the torque and gets 45 mpg. I've got close to 120k miles and a few track days. It's been great fun! Makes for an awesome bike hauler too...

Hey fellow mountain bikers I have an honest question: with all your knowledge and experience would you recommend a 2010 Jetta TDI wagon with 70K on the clock?
I'm in the market for smallish wagon with good mpg, however reliability is extremely important.
    Awesome car buy it?
    Not so awesome run away?
I trolled their forums but, uh, well I figured I'd ask people that I can relate to.
    Thanks for any helpful insight

Can't speak to that that exact model, but our '12 TDI, while a great driving car, with 66K on it is starting to come up with issues. First and foremost is the "dieselgate" recall which is yet to be resolved, second is the Takata airbag recall, and third is now a valve between the NOX trap and cat. There have been some rough running issues, as well as a few times where it won't start (feels like a dead battery but it isn't that). I would hold off on a used TDI until they figure out the recall or buy-back situation.

My 2011 just had the valve between the cats go bad too. VW has a service recall for that and I should be able to get it fixed for free.

My advice would be if you live in a CARB state don't do it. There is no way of knowing how hard registering it will be down the road. If VW gets forced to buy them all back you could come out of it OK but there is no way to know at this point. Don't get me wrong I LOVE my TDI but there is just not enough info right now to know if its a good buy.

    Without reading this whole thread...

Is it safe to install a hitch/bike rack on a VW Golf? I was looking at the Etrailers site for hitches and they say the hitch has a weight limit of 200LBS. My Thule rack is a heavy beast.
    Any experiences?

Edit: I went through the thread. Saw some Golfs with hitch racks, so it shouldn't be a problem.

We have a hitch on our '12 Golf and have easily carried 80 pounds (rack and tandem) on it. I think it would carry double that amount, but it would be more concerning on how it effects the car dynamics considering how far beyond the bumper of the car it places the weight. We are picking up our new '16 GTI S manual today, and I am thinking about going with the roof rack for this one. Even a standard bike is pretty wide for the body, and a tandem without wheels still sticks out beyond the mirrors. I like the OEM roof rack for it's clean lines. Maybe wrap the silver with vinyl or dip it so it blends better.

My latest garage project. 1969 Beetle
    yo yo yo Vdub thread!!!!-1-1-1-.jpg

Worked my ass off to get it on the road and get the stance I was looking for. So much work. Tons of wiring as well. That sucked bad. It's been fun to work on though.
    yo yo yo Vdub thread!!!!-2-1-1-.jpg

    .....and to drive of course.
    yo yo yo Vdub thread!!!!-3-1-1-.jpg

For the beetler keeners out there, I have the period correct deck lid in the garage without the vents. I'm repairing it currently then paint, then installing it back on the car. I'm not fond of the vented deck lid for the car especially since it wasn't there from the factory. Running a 1600 single so I'm not too concerned about needing more air anyway. I'll run standoffs if it starts getting hot. Vents need to go IMO.
    yo yo yo Vdub thread!!!!-5-1-1-.jpg

Got sick of the original baby blue coil in the engine compartment as it looked like sh!t in there so I grabbed a can of one of my empties and used it as a cover. Much nicer now
    yo yo yo Vdub thread!!!!-can-1-1-.jpg

Modified the period correct rack slightly so I can carry my bikes up there. Still not the most appropriate rack as I can't leave it unattended for even a second but it get's me to the trailhead or to the meeting place for gravel grinders should the need arise. The car certainly attract attention. Some times too much actually.

Modified the bike rack on the Eurovan. I grew tired of removing front wheels to attach the bikes (x4 bikes, time adds up), and ran out of roof space to stow the wheels when we added the roof-top tent.
So, I constructed some wheel baskets to replace the fork-mounts...
