Stripped bolt on Thule T2...now what?

So I am on my second Thule rack and having issues.

My first was a Doubletrack rack, which I returned to REI (using their generous return/exchange policy) afte rI noticed it was marring my top tubes. I picked up the T2 as an exchange, and have been generally happy until today.

I noticed that the support "beam" that holds the bike was a bit loose tonight. I took my socket wrench and 5 mm hex bit and gradually and alternately tightened the bolts down, however during the process, the hex head portion of the bolt stripped and is now rounded on one of the bolts. The downside - the bolt can neither be tighened, nor removed! Now what?

As far as I can tell I have a few options - exchange the rack at REI again for another T2 and hope for the best, return the rack, get my cash and buy a Kuat or 1up rack, or just live with it (not gonna happen for $440!).

Anyone else experience this? Have any suggestions or recommendations?

there are several ways depending how big the nut head is and how much clearance you have. when i striped bolt on my brake caliper i had to use file due to head size and clearance. you can also file file side of head, make two parallel flat areas so the wrench could grip. there is also wrench that is supposed to remove striped bolts. i think HD has them. otherwise powertool

or... see if there is a standard size allen wrench that is slightly oversized, and drive it in with a hammer. Not sure if there is an oversize for 5mm, but worth a shot.

IIRC, those are button head allen bolts. Maybe there is enough meat on there to grab the sides with sove vice grips? Use some big beefy ones that don't flex.

I've been able to get away with grabbing the bolt by the other threaded end and turning it back through the bolt with good vice grips.

Naturally, all of these methods trash the bolt, and it will have to be replaced. No big.
