Saris Bones, Thule Archway, or Receiver installation?

Due to recent events, I am in the market for a new bike carrier. I've only ever used roof-mounts before, but I'd like to go behind-the-car this time. I drive an 03 jetta, and I know a receiver hitch is an option, it just seems overkill as I can't foresee carrying more than two bikes, and at this point never have carried more than one.

Do the higher end trunk mount options still damage the vehicle over time (that would be a convincing reason to go hitch-mount)? Asking for actual experiences rather than conjecture please
