I have a VW hatch as well, and take it from me... you do not want the cheap type that clips onto the roof sills and/or glass like you mentioned. Unless you keep a perfectly washed car these will scratch your paint over time. Not a big deal on a 10 year old beater car, but on a 09 GTI... oh no! Also, when you get it on your car, you will realize what kind of pressure it places on your vehicles body and glass to have a full size mountain bike hanging off the end. Even worse, a lot of these cheesy clip on carriers don't fit bikes with curved geometry frames. Also, if you have any sort of a lip spoiler at the top of your hatchback you will need to take it off most likely to avoid ruining it.

You should be able to get a hitch and swagman xc2 for about $250.

    It's worth it.

Don't let the price put you off from purchasing. The 1up USA Quik-Rack is definitely worth the money, one of the best mtb-related purchases I've made. But you would need a hitch as well for it.

For sure. What's your concern, wheelbase, weight or big tires?

I use mine to haul a Kona Stinky (fairly heavy and 2.5" tires) and my Transition TransAM with 2.4" tires. Works like a charm.

My buddy was using a T2 on his GTI. Now he has an R32 and there's no place to put the receiver. Oh Well.
    I like turtles
