question for those with racks attached to trunk/hitch

    title

are you ever worried that some dbag will hit the back of your car and wreck your bike while driving? or are you just careful when driving to your mtb destination to mitigate that risk.

It's covered by my insurance so if someone were to smash my bike and rack I get to upgrade to the newest model!
    Bike good, work bad.

This is a major concern. I called my insurance company and specifically asked about this situation. If it's the others drivers fault then their insurance will take care of the car/bike damage. If they don't have insurance you will need to look at the uninsured motorist policy on your insurance plan. My insurance company told me if it was stolen I would have to file it under my homeowner policy. YMMV. I would definitely look at the details of your policy.

No, I'm not really worried. I think people actually back off when they see bikes for fear of catching flying debris (water bottle, tire pump, multi-tool) across their windshield.

Well, that's actually how I see it. I know how securely my rig is mounted but not always confident that others are as careful, so I keep a safe distance while following.
