Need rear rack for 3 bikes: 1997 Jeep Wrangler

    I need a rear rack for a '97 Wrangler.

There are two types of racks for it:

    Spare tire rack (30" spare)

    Class 3 hitch rack

The problem I've had with the hitch racks is that they don't clear the spare...is there a rack that does on a Wrangler? That would be preferable.

Or is there a good 3-bike rack that would fit on the tire?

Where would I find these racks? Would like to keep it somewhat inexpensive...

    Thanks!

3 bikes on a spare mount on a TJ is asking for trouble. The weight of the bikes and the tire will warp the tailgate. Go for the hitch mount. Clearing the spare is not hard.

Check out my post here: http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=309356

for a little over a $100, you can get a 4 bike rack. I've had mine for about a year w/o problems. This one def will clear your spare tire.
Either you rode today, or you didn't.

    Thanks everyone.

It's not my car, the TJ is a friend's. He's got a two bike spare carrier right now. The dilemma was that I shipped the GT up here, and will have to pay $150 to ship it back. He lives near me, so I was hoping to buy a rack for him and save a few bucks, but I didn't know that racks were that expensive.

His bikes are a built Ellsworth Joker and an old cromoly Gary Fisher singlespeed. The bike he would carry for me is a 30ish lb 2001 GT Aggressor 2.0. Probably too heavy.

I don't want to warp his tailgate!

    Thanks!

I'll see if he wants to split the cost of that Quadratec rack.

Even 2 bikes and an OEM sized spare make the tailgate flex a lot. Best bet is go for a hitch rack, be it 2, 3 or 4 bikes on a Jeep. There are lots of options to clear a stock tire. I can clear a 31" spare no problem with most, even my Thule T2.
