    Load Capacity/weight limit?

    hey guys,

just purchased a (hitched) bike rack for my Acura MDX. i bought it from a guy on craigslist but didnt think too much of the load capacity/weight limit sticker on the rack until i got home.

it says 79 lbs or 36kg capacity. its a two bike rack. also its a Honda product.

will this be an issue if i go over? say, i place 3 bikes on the rack? total weight of 100 lbs?

    thanks in advance.

If you are willing to accept all liability when it comes off on the highway then go right ahead.

Normally good manufacturers such as Thule and Yakima put some extra strength in their products. Another thing is rack construction - if there's no obvious things to snap chances are that rack will bent before failing and you'll notice it. Even if it looks strong enough you need to be careful on road bumps and potholes - that's where rack is most likely to fail. Personally I wouldn't overload rack if I drive on highways but if you driving 10 minutes in city to the nearest park then probably you're good to put extra bike on the rack. After all if it falls it won't kill anybody in slow traffic.

If it has places for only 2 bikes, then you can't fit 3 on there.

But if you got a rack with room for 4 bikes, you can fit 4 bikes on it IF they don't go over the load limit of the Acura MDX hitch.

2 things to keep in mind:
    1. Load limit of the rack itself
    2. Load limit of the hitch on the vehicle
