How much trailer hitch flex is acceptable

I'm always fixated on my rear-view mirror when hauling bikes watching the hitch rack bounce on bumps. The rack is pretty sturdy and well attached to the hitch so I think it is the hitch flexing.

Do hitches ever break? Mine is a class III, rated with 350 lbs tongue weight. My rack fully loaded weighs about 225 lbs, but the fulcrum is moved away from the tongue. Does anyone know much about hitches who could comment? I have been told by some not to worry, but am looking for other opinions.

if the receiver (what you're calling the hitch) is properly secured to the vehicle (i.e. no missing or loose mounting bolts) then it is not going to sway or flex or move. period.

the bouncing you're seeing is the rack, not the receiver. what kind of rack is it, and how is it secured into the receiver?

    Thanks for the response.

It is a North Shore Rack. It is held in the receiver by a square shaped nut which is inside the square tube that goes into the receiver.

There are no missing bolts. It was recently installed using a torque wrench.

The rack does have a rather long arm, so perhaps that is all that I am seeing which I am much more comfortable with.

A receiver should have zero movement when installed properly period. 225# on a long arm will give you movement and IMHO that is what probably makes the whole assembly move a bit.
