cheapest way to get yakima racks onto '99 Tahoe

Looks like an awful lot of money to buy the lowriders and whatnot in order to add 58" bars...

what are the older models that would do the same thing (so I can searched used?)

has anyone added the cross bars custom with some other mount?

How about modifying the yakima mounting points on the bike carriers themselves to take the factory oblong bar?

    thanks for any help

you can search around for a used pair of lowrider towers...prior to the lowrider was the doublecross tower.
be careful when you are looking for these parts used: there is a rubber boot that is part of the tower that softens the tower against the siderail. alot of times this boot can be lost or missing and the tower won't secure properly without it....and, now that they are disconinued, it could be a hard part to come by without a special order from yakima...

i wouldn't mod the bike racks, and the crossbars on your tahoe that come with the car are pretty wimpy for attaching bikes to directly, so i'd be extra careful trying to do anything like that.

The metal crossbars are fine. I have Thules on one vehicle and factory bars on the Suburban and they seem to be a lot more stiff and robust than the plastic crossbars used by many manufacturers. So depending on what factory bars you have, they may work as-is.

I have four "Yakima" "Doublecross" towers specfically purchased for a '99 Tahoe. They have been in storage for 5 years. You would hardly know they were ever used. Yours if you can still use them for $40. I also have two 58" crossbars from Yakima. I'm not interested in selling but if you can use them, add $20 to the total price. My only warning is that I have no key for the locks. You can purchase replacement lock cylinders from Yakima direct. The "Doublecross" towers were purchased new in '99 for over $200. Let me know if you can use them. Below are some photos...
