Car and Biker on the Road

Instead the usual roof rack versus hitch mount conundrum, here's something different.

Once a summer, I like to take a week off and throw the bike on the roof of the car and go.

The plan is fairly simple, pick a handful of premier mtn. bike destinations, and link them together using the most scenic, winding, interesting routes I can find.

Most days feature one or two rides and a little driving. Because temps were high I typically rode early in the am and early evening and drove in the afternoons.

The first day began with a romp over Mc Clure pass on CO 133. this is my favorite regional drive.

The eastern rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison made for the first of many National Parks/Monuments etc. that I would pass through or around.

Since the first days destination was Cortez,CO, I stopped for a late afternoon matinee
at Boggy Draw outside of Delores.

The next morning was of course Phil's World. I'd ridden here before, but this is totally worth revisiting anytime, you are near.

It is the most FUN place I have ever ridden. It's like an amusement park for the mtb.

The evening ride was a return to Boggy Draw to finish the rest of the loops there.

Riding at Sand Canyon is like getting to ride at nearby Mesa Verde, but without all the National Park scene.

I got there early enough to get a good parking space!

In addition to really great singletrack, there are lots of ruins left from the Ancestral Puebloans (they don't like to be called Anasazi anymore) who lived in the area from 900-1200ad.

A truly amazing place. The fact that you can go there on a bike is just frosting.

That's all the pictures I'm allowed and mrs. jummo is starting to give me that look.

Stayed tuned for Car and Biker on the Road Part 2 when we cross the Zion Curtain and move deep into the southern heart of Utah.
