Can't open hatch of 2017 Subaru Forester with Swagman XC2 hitch rack installed...

is this typical with hitch racks? i can't even open the hatch WITHOUT bikes, let alone with them.

    did i do something wrong?

Most hitch racks don't have that pole permanently affixed upwards, I'm assuming that's what your hatch is hitting? That style just doesn't work with hatches then. Check out other hitch racks from companies like Kuat, Thule, or OneUp and you'll see that there's nothing to obstruct the hatch when the rack is folded down.
