    99 Eclipse with High Spoiler
anybody have a 97-99 eclipse with the high spoiler? Looking for a rack to fit 1 bike for sure, 2 (1mtb, 1 road) would be nice but not necessary. I don't have any shops around my area so I can't test a bunch of different ones.

Saris Bones looks like maybe an option, but how long are the straps?

there is no universal or standard type receiver hitch available for this car. I'm not going to spend the money to have a custom one fabricated.

Buy another car that is more bike friendly?

    lol jk

Maybe try the seasucker, they can be trunk mounted or roof mounted, and easily taken off.

Pretty neat idea, if I didnt drive something with a hitch rack I would check these out for sure.

thanks spazzy, I checked them out. I'm sure theyre totally safe and reliable, but i'd have a really hard time putting my superfly 100 on those and cruising down interstate.

nice find bandit...i definitely didnt find that one.

Really don't want to go the hitch route though. if at all possible.

I hear ya its a sportier car, so you don't want to mess w/the look. Maybe google around for somebody thats installed it before, maybe its not too bad?

Remember, it always looks good with a couple bikes on the back!

Side note, I'm currently installing a hitch on my 07' MDX. I had a "strap" rack on my previous 02' MDX and it damaged the paint, dented the car, and was a pain in the ya know what to put on and off. Hitch is the way to go!

Sure there is. 15 seconds on Google would have told you that.

    but i appreciate you're generosity.

Remove nonfunctional wing? I've always loved dsm's, but hate the little spoiler.

Rear spoilers on front wheel drive cars are stupid, IMHO. I mean, if anything you want more downforce in the front. Adding more downforce in the rear just slows the car down and sucks more gas for no good reason... that is even if the thing give you any downforce at all. FWD cars tend to plow, unless you have tons of power and control it with left foot braking.

Even an AWD car, if that is what you got... it won't do anything for you until you get over 90 mph.

I think it just junks up the clean lines of the Eclipse. I always chuckle at the Honda Civics with the ridiculously huge adjustable rear spoilers. I guess it makes them happy.

    I know... you didn't ask. :D

Then again, hatchback strap-on racks just jack up the paint, which is why I was suggesting a hitch rack in the first place. Just saying. At least white hides the swirly scratches and dull clearcoat patches under the rack feet.

I guess I didn't realize this was the aerodynamics thread. Or the "if it was my car I'd do XXXXXXX" thread.

I like it, hence my car. If you can't contribute to my question, don't post.

What knowledge do you base that claim upon?

First of all, I love the car, I love how that spoiler looks on there, like it belongs.

To your question, I highly recommend you stay away from the strap on racks, they are designed for trunks, not hatches. The "top" straps are going to be stretched out too long, and you'll have quite a bit of wobble. (at least the one I tried)

the hitch or roof is your best option, more expensive I know, but that has been my experience.

Setting up racecars, way back in the day. Plus, its barely outside of the roof's draft... even that tall spoiler. I don't even see an inverted airfoil shape on there.

Spoilers are there to interrupt the airflow and reduce the low pressure, and associated lift, that is generated by the airfoil shape of the car.

I found your comment about AWD cars not needing a wing until 90mph to be curious as there are AWD cars out there that have wings that deploy at 75mph.

I am guessing that the engineers that did the wind tunnel testing know more about that kind of stuff than someone who allegedly "set up racecars, way back in the day."

You came to us asking what we recommend. That in itself is basically saying "if this was your car, what would you do XXXXXXXX". Hell I even complimented the car. My solution to your problem would be to remove the wing. You would have a large selection of mounts available then, but you wouldn't look near as fast and furious. To each their own, but nonfunctional wings are for slow cars with fart cans if you ask me. If you don't want to take the advice, then don't take it. There's no reason to go all emo about it though. ^^^ Nice!

I looked at this car before buying a 1997 Saab 900SE coupe. Even though the Saab's cavernous hatch could easily accommodate my bike, I went with a Saab/Thule roof rack and shortened up the wheel trays by 4" so it wouldn't interfere with the hatch opening.

I was into MTBing already at that time and realized that the Eclipse was probably the worst car you could buy as a bike transporter - short roof, small trunk, large rear glass hatch, big carrying-handle (oops - spoiler), limited hitch options.

There are roof-type fork mount wheel trays that mount to the hatch, but your spoiler is going to be in the way. Ditto for a Saris bones trunk rack.

IMHO - get the hitch rack and take it off when you're not moving bikes around. Option 2 is to partially disassemble the bike and squeeze it into the trunk.

    Good luck - JMJ

NOPE, Saris Bones will not fit. I have the same car and that sucker will not fit. What i do is take front wheel off, fold rear seats and it goes right in.
