1 UP vs the new Saris Freedom SuperClamp?

I was about to pull the trigger on a 1UP 2 bike rack when I saw this

    Any thoughts?

Only issue to me is the use of plastic. The 1UP is aluminum throughout the entire mechanism (ok there are two pieces of stainless also used in the slide) but for me eventually I see plastic failing. Heat, cold, salt, snow what ever mother nature deals plastic just will not last as long as aluminum. I'm sure others feel differently.

How can you be against freedom?

Those fork hook kinda setups don't pay well with Leftys. That was one of the main reasons I dumped my T2.

Glad to see more companies making tray racks rather than frame hangers. That said, this looks really similar to the Thule T2 so that puts it in the category of "nothing new under the sun."

I think the new Saris looks pretty well thought out from the pictures. How it works will be impossible to know without touching one. Good idea to use symmetry on the wheel clamps, keeps individual part counts down.

Looks like the bikes will be very close to each other though, could have some touching on pedals or bars to wheels.

The two-clamps-on-one-clamping-arm is a deal breaker for me. I have a similar design Yakima (Stick-Up?) and you end up moving bikes around until things fit. Notice in the pictures they have a small bike on the inside and a tall bike one the outside. Probably a pain with two similar sized bikes.

One of the reasons I own a 1Up and the Yakima hangs in the garage.

With that in mind I'll install it at the store and put 2 29ers on it.

The new Saris rack looks interesting. I had the Saris Cycle-On 2 bike plus the 2 bike add on for 6+ years and overall it was very good. I needed (wanted actually more accurate) a new rack and went with the 1 up, 2 bike heavy duty with 1 bike add on in black. Damn is it a nice piece of equipment. I just hope it holds up over time and a lot of miles because the cost is almost ridiculous.

Ouch. There's quite an upcharge for black. Lovely, but I stuck with silver.
