Replace Cannondale 96 F700 headshok or fork?

Forgive me for my ignorance. I need advice about replacement of a front shock absorber. My older son was given, about 6 years ago, a Cannondale F700 (I think it's a 96, might be a 97). He loved it, and I can understand why. It's extremely lightweight. Anyway, he was just a dumb kid, ignored signs of wear on the rings that held the front shock together, and one day he came home with the front shock absorber having completely fallen apart - lots of metal slats coming out. We retired the bike, and he is grown and out of the house. Meanwhile, younger son will be the right size for it in a year or so. I have looked in the past, and found out that Cannondale doesn't make a replacement part for it. Hubby wants it out of the garage, unless we can get it in working order. What options do we have? The rest of the bike is in good shape. Son would only use it for neighborhood riding, local trails. We're not bigtime mountain bikers.

The cheapest option will be a used Headshok on ebay for $100 to $150
Or a conversion kit for $35 and any standard 1 1/8 fork.
Don't throw the original fork out, keep it with the bike.
