Top of the hill at Cherry Canyon and top of the hill above Whiting Woods (Verdugo Mtn). Not my favorite places but certainly the most traveled to/upon.

    .

    SART (Santa Ana River Trail)

Red Bull (Which we laugh at too, having been to watch the real thing a few years back in SW Utah, but for mere mortals it will have to do!) - Dirt Mulholland just west of the top of Sullivan.

    Car Crash / Farmers

    Car Crash Redux

Backbone / Will Rodgers - Early spring time on the backbone. (Still frame from GoPro)

Okay, my pictures aren't nearly as pretty or eye pleasing as everyone else's, but I like them because of what they represent. I love an early morning ride where it's slightly sunny on top of the mountains but as you drop you go through a cloud layer and it gets cold and moist. For those that know Sullivan this is the fireroad going to the top and the canyon that you drop into is below the clouds.

You're kidding, right? Great pix! In all my 20+ year riding the SM's I've only seen it like this a few times, and didn't have a camera with me. Love the sunny blue sky's above with that dense fog, looking like it wants to spill out of the bowl!

    Great photographs!

We get to experience the "sea of clouds/fog" fairly often when riding in and around the San Gabriels. Love it!

Hey everyone, I'm new here. There is a canal that I like to ride that gives me the opportunity to take some cool photos.

There are also some small reservoirs.

And from there ^^^^ we went here:

    Socal Pics Thread-2013-05-12.jpg

and saw loads of trail that looked like this:

    Socal Pics Thread-2013-05-12.jpg

    and this:

    Socal Pics Thread-2013-05-12.jpg

    on a day like this:

    Socal Pics Thread-2013-05-12.jpg

There's some significance to this ride that is probably only known to a couple of us . . . the last time we were here, it didn't go so swell. This time was much better, and while this was probably one of, if not the, most technically challenging ride I've been on, it was still a lot of fun. I'm sure there are plenty of folks out there who can clean the Mt. Zion climb . . . but I am not one of them.

Chantry Flats? i recognize the rocky exposure and dark canopy. Last time i rode there my buddy messed up his elbow in the beginning and had to ride the rest of the trail. I dont think i've cursed at my buddy that many times before that climb out of the valley. I remember it being relentless and mind numbing... You of course have your own story to tell : )

I don't know about "plenty of people than can clean the Mt. Zion climb." I have been told there are some, but some of those switchbacks are no joke. One of my favorite SoCal rides for certain.

This is my local riding area (taken with my iPhone):

Back at Sycamore Cyn this weekend, second time since reopening after the fire, and even though its not evident by this photograph, amazingly with little or no rain there is new green growth.

These are some great photos. Here is one that really shows So Cal. It is from Aliso at top of the World looking over Laguna Cyn with Catalina in the background and the June gloom over the ocean. Plus I was having a crappy day at work at took the afternoon to escape and ride to regain the proper peace of mind I get while riding.
Enjoy the picture and think calm, happy thoughts of riding down Meadows.

Were you there today? I was as well . . . however, when I was up there, visibility was less than 100ft due to the marine layer. Didn't see the sun once.
Alcohol may lead nowhere, but it sure is the scenic route!

Riding in a heavy fog or marine layer is the best! I was there around 8-ish. Either it's the lack of vegetation or that I haven't ridden much lately but it felt abnormally hot when I was climbing the fire road. It looked like the clouds were rolling in when I was leaving.

Rode the NASCAR trail in Carlsbad Monday. Very fun little trail not super long (maybe took 10 mins to ride all the way down...including my crash lol). Haven't tried out the rest of the trails there yet but they all look fun

I'm normally at the top of the hill by 7:30a. When I take that bike I hike it up switchbacks. I normally ride Saturdays but I'm starting to go on Sunday as well.

Where are some good places to ride around the 210 FWY near Rancho Cucamonga? Do I have to go way more west?

I used to live by Whiting Ranch and rode that all the time. Now, I'm over off the 15FWY and the 210.

    Any good sites to check?

Considering jsut a couple runs were open with limited features, alot has changed. They were still working on the trails as we were riding down. They was alot of loose dirt as well. As the day progressed, the trails started getting harder.

There is Marshall Canyon and Claremont Hills. Marshall Canyon has a fire-road you climb to the top, it meats up with Claremont Hills loop, which if you like fire-roads also has access up to Potato mountain. But with Marshall Canyon there are some fun single-track on the way down that is pretty cool.

Also try Southridge park in Fontana. They also hold DH races there. I think that's pretty close for you!?

Its a Rune 650b and the Pike is a 160 Solo Air. Here is a review I left of the Pike on another site!

"I set sag in full open mode, 65lbs gave me -25% sag. That is way off the mark of the chart. I did several loops on the same trail today trying to dial in the fork going from the recommended 80psi down to 65psi and everything in between. I like it but by no means blown away. It is a good fork no doubt but with all the hype I am left a bit puzzled. I would say it is on par with the Fox RC2 damper. I am not saying its a bad fork, I do like it.

    The good-

    Weight
Controlled while cornering, stays planted in rough
Big hits, ramps up great and feels bottomless (hucks to flat WTH)
    Plush in initial stroke

    The bad-

Looks (not terrible but I prefer others, never cared for all black)
High speed chunder was a bit better than the CTD 34 but not by much. A lot of feedback in the hands and blurred vision is not good. This is where the Float RC2 & Van is superior
    Lack of HSC"

I've grown to really appreciate that view. I'm usually gassed at that point after climbing Johnson's or Chumash. Or Llajas/Oil Wells/Sea Shells. Beautiful area, for sure.

Popping out the bottom of squirrel-cage, Sullivan Cyn (SM Mtns.), my wife on her backup bike for a week. Her being so "knar" she blew up the RP23 on her Knolly!

Awesome pic, where was this taken from? Santa Barbara? I wish they allowed bikes on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa island, would be some epic riding out there even if it is mostly fire roads.

    (Cross posting from "Passion")

    Sycamore Canyon.

Our friend Paul climbing on his new Czar. The area is still very much blackened after this past springs enormous wildfire. It makes it seem as if you are riding on another planet. Waiting for winter rains to bring back the vegetation that once covered this area. Hopefully we'll get gentle / light rains to keep from having mudslides. Good weekend for riding in SoCal.

great shot- you really get a sense of the grade going up that- kind of hard to tell if its Guadalasca or Backbone but its promising to see the green coming back. So no closure or is it unaffected since its a state park?

All of the state park is open, but the area from the parking lot at Wendy to just past the culture center/bathrooms is "closed" since its a national recreation area. I never noticed it was actually a separate area until now.

Zero... um, yea. We drove out from WLA, and met two friends that drove down from SB, got our gear on, and rolled over to the Wendy gate only to discover what you have noted. None of us had any idea this little 1.2mi section was "national".

Its BB. We climbed Guad and then dropped down BB. So, even though the rider is climbing here, its really mostly at DH trail - as you know. Yes we've been out to Sycamore a few times since the fire, the first time the day after it reopened. I hope we get just the right amount of rain this year, because if we do spring time might look amazing with new green and flowers that normally show up. All of that against the blackened soil and manzanita.

I think the beach entrance is part of the state park, which I thought extended to the beach across PCH as well. I've only started there once, but if I recall you have to pay for parking there.

Yeah as I sat at the Wendy entrance yesterday I'd say about a third of the people arriving at the trail (way fewer than normal) turned back. Not sure what the other entrance down Potrero was like. The signs weren't deterring many people though...

Probably true- i usually dont want to pay $12 for the day parking there anyway. Only bummer will be the lack of bathrooms if the campgrounds are closed..

Funny, I always thought of it the other way around - BB being the climb and Guad being the drop.

The beach and campground are both definitely state operated. I like starting from there - pack the car with some asada and beer, have yourself a post-ride BBQ and swim. Plenty of parking on PCH just above the beach, but yeah, $12 to park in the lot.

I ride there for a quick ride and a change, especially when it's mid-day and it's kinda hot....I found one thing out. Don't park your vehicle backed-in to the space, unless you want some 'extra' attention!
That sidehill single track that goes south to behind the Strauss brewery has been really upgraded. I detect the influence of Rich Julien there. That guy really gets around!

    Correct, LRC.
Leaves started dropping in quantity yesterday.
Mammoth trails are great right now-you can pedal up Off the Top to the summit.
    This weekend should be perfect.

Off the Top was one of my favorite trails the last time I was up there. But I don't think I could pedal all the way up there......my Sea-level lungs are not adjusted for that thin atmosphere.

Are you on Dirt Treaders Gouda? Pretty good spot to get the low down on SD riding.

    Greetings,

First post, and since I live in SoCal seemed a good place. Pics were taken last winter in the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park and Marshall Canyon.

The canyon has become very popular! I am up there 3 4 times a week but seldom bring a camera.
