riding MTRP in the early evenings and riding through swarms of these friggen gnats, like thousands, like riding through a ocean of gnats, wind up all over my body and god help me if I turn on my helmet light!''

Mount a bug zapper on your helmet.

I was swarmed by flies up in Cuyamaca/Laguna yesterday, including some biting flies. No ticks, though.

I consider them mini cycling coaches. Once I get up to a certain speed.....they get dropped.

On the plus side, if you're hungry while riding, just open your mouth big and wide. You don't even have to stop!

yesterday I used a bug repellent. It seemed to work even though it made me smell like an insecticide plant.

I have found that the common SoCal gnat can fly no faster than 6.5 mph. I have also found that I'm incapable of sustaining 6.6mph while climbing Nate Harrison Grade Rd.

+1 on the bug head net. I have the Sea-To-Summit model available at REI.

I'm gonna have to get a net too. Bandana restricts airflow too much.

I've noticed a few gnats that seem to always follow me up Hostetter Fire Road in La Tuna and when I used to run I could swat them but it's harder biking.

Thousands of gnats? That's ****ed up. What city is this?

All head nets are not created equal. I tried the one I found, no brand name on it. Has a solid fabric top panel. It was awful couldn't see a damn thing, and sweat clings to it. It has way too fine mesh,. I just need it for black Flies and skeets, not no-see-ums.

My Sea To Summit net kicks that POS's ass. I reco splurging the five bucks for one that doesn't suck.

They used to get bad at Hodges. That's why I liked my Kali helmet with the mesh in the air vents. Keeps the bees out. I moved to N.C. and we have mosquitos, ticks, chiggers, gnats, giant spiders, and these horrible little green worms that come down from the trees on strands of silk. I finished a ride and found about 30 of them all over me. At least they don't bite. But the trails here are incredible.

2020 is really shaping up. I have noticed the insane amount of bugs if you go ride around 6.
