I was there the middle of last month. The trail itself was fine except in some places where water was collecting and ruts were forming.

I do think it is kind of dangerous with all the hikers and the tight trail. Had some close calls.

My buddy rides there regularly. Condition isn't bad.

I was there on Sat the 8th with two friends from OC. We did two shuttle-runs at 6:30 and 9:30 and we all thought the trail was in great shape. Now remember we are all from OC and it was our first time there.

Don't worry, there aren't any blown out sections. The trail is in great shape now. It's a blast going down, but be mindful of the hikers :-)

I think the OP is referring to Upper Sam Merrill trail(sometimes called Middle Merrill).
El Prieto and Sunset Ridge Trail have had recent trail work and are in great shape.
Upper Sam Merrill, like Sunset Ridge trail and El Prieto are part of the Mt. Wilson shuttle runs but Upper Sam Merrill is getting blown out because it gets no trail work but lots of shuttling.

Check out that second video at 12:13. Is it really that narrow, off camber, with a sheer drop?

All trails, sunset, merrill and especially el P are in great shape. we ride these on a weekly basis. Sunset is consistent with trail conditions, Merrill is a blast, and El P is actually better than last year, some trail maintaince has made the last section a breeze.

Yeah, there's several spots that have sheer drops. The good news, though, is that the drops aren't that far... maybe 20ft in the worst spots.. enough to get hurt though. It's the upper sections .. Middle Merrill and Sunset that have some spots that if you go off the edge, it's gonna be lights out.
