    not yet

but there is a possibility it will close, along with other demo forrests (inc. soquel demo in santa cruz) due to lack of funding.

The Sunday ride of MBTB was to help raise awareness of the problem. If you'd like to get involved, unclemtb is a member of the friends of Boggs, a group that is working to save the forrest and keep it open.

Lack of funding?!? How the hell does it cost anything to allow bikes to ride on trails???

I love Boggs, as well as Soquel. Two of my favorite places to ride!

    The Budget got passed...

...Thru a comprimise on the definition of "Demonstration forest"

The budget pays for admin of the forest and any manning that is needed.
In the past it also paid for maps etc. which are now paid for by "Friends of Boggs".

    Here is the link:
    http://boggsmountain.org/

Informing people of the need to demonstrate forest practices was the intent of the Demo forests...but there are those who think we should import pest ridden lumber from countries who don't have the environmental oversight that we have in California.
So when they block the timber harvest there is no money to cover the budget.

This is a simplistic view of it, but it is basically how it works.

Very insightful, Tim. I would have thought (not knowing a whole lot about the situation) that California needs to staff the area for purposes of fire fighting, as well as demonstrating sustainable timber harvesting practices.
I'm going to tell my boys about friendsofboggs.org, so we can get involved and do our small part.

    Paging Tim-UncleMTB

Looks like I won't have time in my schedule this weekend (got to work and visit parents) or next weekend to ride Boggs because I'll be getting my new trail dog settled in at my place. Her name is Martha (to be changed probably to Maggie). Check out the 'China Camp....first time' thread in this forum for pics of her. She's part Aussie herder and part Blue Heeler. Very sweet and super smart.

I'll probably be able to come up sometime in August on a weekend. Probably after the Howell Mountain race at PUC on Aug15th.

Boggs News as of this morning...

...I stopped in to visit Hoz the CDF ranger who has worked at Boggs for the last 4 years in exchange for quarters.

The state has decided not to fill the forest manager position at Boggs.
This means that the gate will be open with no one patroling or managing the forest.
So what we love and have worked on will be at risk for vandalism etc.
Hoz has been doing the patroling...He was told that since there will be no manager to supervise him he has to move out!

He stopped over to check out my camp trailer as a temp. place to stay and keep his stuff.

The Helitack group of three has their hands full fighting fires...only Bill Cleeb was on site today as the others are on fire scenes around the state.

Whatever effort you give to keep the forests open and worth visiting remember one thing...
"The Demo forest you save may not be your own".
