Hero dirt is what we're going to have at Demo after this week's rain. Pics cannot capture its awesomeness, it must be experienced.

Hero dirt is the exact right consistency and moisture that almost no wrong can be done because traction is unbelievably good. One can ride like a deranged hero and the biggest risk is hurting your face from grinning too hard and too long.

Best example for me was '03 in Tahoe. We had three days of perfect light soaking rain and when it ended we waited 48 hours and went and did Armstrong/Toads. The Star Wars section on Toads was off the chart. Those big moto built berms that will normally blow out were solid and perfectly tacky. Near handlebar dragging warping was done.

hero dirt is that sexy sound of knobby rubber pulling out of terra firma that can't quite stick to your tires.

Villain dirt is to be found around the Santa Teresa County Park trails for up to a week after it rains for a couple of days. Itís the sort of dirt/mud that builds up on your tires with each revolution such that the wheels eventually stop rotating since the claylike muck just sticks like gorilla snot.

Yep. Everyone just ends up inside dreaming about it until they can get out to ride. That perception in the eye of mountain bikers everywhere is what makes it a tangible bit of thisness.

That will never be hero dirt. The only reason to take that trail is to get to diablo ranch. Plenty of unnamed diablo trails with hero dirt.

    to the mud police

... call it semi-hero dirt - some of the rockier dirt holds up well in the rain.

The first rains of the season are soooo welcome. I rode in a light rain yesterday, with my senses WFO. Tounge handing out catching raindrops and inhaling that bay/oak scented fresh air, followed by a semi-hero dirt descent, makes me feel like a 10 year old kid (until the morning)

Another rain to wash and pack it down, followed by a day or two of sunshine and it's full on hero dirt! Should be awesome later this week.

and just for the mud police, a picture of the post ride, semi-hero dirt splattered bike...Not the cakey, rutty, goo, mud puddle stuff, oh no... this stuff lightly coats the bike and even tastes good:

It looks like most places got a quarter inch of rain. After 4 months of dry conditions, that should be good right? Taking the afternoon off might be a good deal.

What is the difference between Hero Dirt and Summer Dirt?

About 35 seconds off my best time from 9:15 to 8:40... (By the way, that Bob dude is fast):

    A different definition

I have a somewhat different definition of "hero dirt". I think of hero dirt as a trail that require heroics to get down alive [really]. Something like this comes to mind: Only one rider cleared all of the Heckletooth descent during the the Fat 55 [definitely not me] - a local and very skilled one at that, on a light AM bike.

Just look at all the pretty yellow caution arrows!

Pictures generally don't do a trail justice but that looks awfully steep. Looks like a couple Santa Cruz trails.

Just look at all the pretty yellow caution arrows!

You guys think Demo will be good by tomorrow afternoon? I had forgotten about the TX-OU game, so that rules out Saturday.

Heckletooth is a sweet trail. I remember some serious pucker factor when rolling in to the start of the descent after enjoying the awesome views at the top.

Demo usually requires a couple days to drain and it was DUMPING up there this afternoon. Riding there tomorrow will likely be bad for the trails. Saturday is iffy...Sunday should be ripe. Just my $.02.

Ok thanks. Maybe I'll shoot for Sunday then pending not much more rain.

There was a confirmed Hero Dirt sighting in SLO today. It dumped on us yesterday, but by this afternoon the clouds parted and the dirt was juuuust dry enough to not stick to my tires. Definitely the most fun I've had on a bike in a while.

So, to sum up,..........hero dirt is moist, it provides excellent knob penetration, and it can be ridden hard?

I just came back from Waterdog park in Belmont. It was the best ever conditions! A couple thoughts came to mind when describing hero dirt:

    - it's a state when the dirt has not decided whether it's wet or it's dry.

    - it's when your tires leave their mark on the dirt but the dirt does not leave a mark on the tire.

    - it's when you can do no wrong when climbing, descending and cornering.

    Hero dirt:

When MR. Jelich makes up his famous Whipped butter. It so damn sticky that when you look at it it looks like a whipped cream topping with the ever so smallest air bubbles in the dirt. ANYTHING will stick like glue with the lightest residue left on the tire. ZERO tire wear with all the traction in the world. It only happens for about 2 weeks in the MTB world but is able to exist every day in the Jelich world. Cherish it, as it is rare in the MTB world.

I rode Waterdog last night around 6, great conditions. The downhill section after the switchbacks (forget trail numbers) was a bit more rutted out, but overall awesome conditions. Wish I'd gone earlier so I could see where I was going better.

Yes, as long as you're just waiting for everyone from out of town to leave. Don't trash them too much for my Monday "commute".

I found some good hero goodness on Kennedy on Friday:

My quads are still aching, and my right ankle feels sort of crunchy.

Uphill conditions were just about perfect, thanks to hero dirt and hero rocks/gravel.

In a lot of spots hero dirt lasts pretty much all winter and into spring. Love it.
