Visiting SF...4 spare days for riding

    Hey Norcal'ers,

I'm visiting from Australia in a few weeks and have 4 free days in mid November. Is there anywhere you'd say is a must ride? So far it looks like Santa Cruz is a pretty good option, but I'm not sure of exactly how long I should spend down there. I don't mind long drives but I'm guessing it's not a great day trip with traffic etc? It looks like there's enough riding to spend a few days in SC but I thought I'd ask just in case. The other option I was thinking of is short trip SC, and then up to Mendocino for a couple of days.

Kudos for the trails around SF, Sutro etc--awesome to be able to get a ride in so close to the city, I only had 2 days last time.

    Cheers!

What kind of riding are you looking for? You could easily do 3 or 4 days of riding around Santa Cruz, although you'd really need a guide to find the best trails along the coast.

Mendocino is a pretty long drive from Santa Cruz. The trails are very XC, although plenty of people love to ride there. It's a stunningly beautiful little town and stretch of coast.

Also, it's been dry, but this is usually when our rainy season starts, so keep an eye on the weather (any rain should get soaked up pretty fast and make for great conditions). Good luck!

    Hi,

For SC the main thing was to check out the flow trail as it looks like a good one to tick off, and Wilder looked pretty good. XC/longer rides suit as I'm in town for work so have to limit risk, anything moderately technical I usually try to avoid-so maybe Mendocino could suit. Thanks for the tip on the weather!

Understandable! Demo and UCSC-Wilder are good choices for you, as well as Nisene Marks State Park. I'm free after the 16th if you'd like somebody to ride with.

Do you have a live DVD from Midnight Oil's latest/current tour?

    If so, let's talk.
I wouldn't even get my hair cut except it's near the liquor store and it seems like my eyebrows need trimming now and then.

Depends what kind of riding your looking for, but plenty of fun local loops in the bay area proper,* and don't overlook a trip to truckee or south lake tahoe- easily could be a long day trip with epic riding...

Keen on Tahoe, havenít looked at Truckee. I was thinking Mid November would be too late for Tahoe though?

They're predicting a decent storm to hit next Sunday, so it looks like the rainy/snow season is finally starting.

Right on, well let's keep an eye on the storm. If not a lot of precipitation you'd be good to go for a day or two of great riding on different terrain. If you wanna do local morning/ evening loops here in Marin or Oakland, let me know.

I have to recommend Skeggs in San Mateo Co. It is located ~1/2 between Santa Cruz and SF.
You can easily spend a day on trails like Resolution, Giant Salamander, (Lower) Methuselah, Manzanita and South Leaf and enjoy some of the Bay Area's best single track.
Be advised tho- climbing will be involved!
