Trail Workday Opportunities - Please post events

Let's use this thread to post trail work days coming very soon... that way someone looking for a last minute thing to do can just scroll to the end. Maybe keep it active/pinned?

(I thought there was a similar thread elsewhere, but I'm being lazy and starting a new one.)

    This weekend:
SF: Regular Sutro Stewards work day, Saturday, 9AM on Mt. Sutro (Note: the one in 2 weeks (2/18) is important: it's a day with Sutro Stewards, SF Urban Riders and Rec Park to work on the Interior Greenbelt trails).

Medocino Coast Cyclists is having a work day Saturday.

What else? I'm surprised I can't find much else. Is Tamarancho holding a work day this weekend? One Tam is holding two events, but they're full. Looks like there's a bunch next weekend in a few places including SF and Demo.

In all my years trying to advocate for trail work help, MTBR hasn't really been a hot bed for generating excitement. Not sure why...seems like the right demographic too. Guess it can't hurt to keep trying though.
I'm not sure how this works.

Indeed, there's people here who are already heavily involved, and others who just like to complain. But there's always a few new folks and the goal is to get one or two of them, who will in turn stick with it, or even better invite their friends. I've found interesting events this way.

    This week:
    SF Urban Riders @ Laguna Honda Saturday 2/11 : https://www.facebook.com/events/1153727804725547/ .

The MBoSC/Demo event has been canceled because, well, Demo is currently unreachable via any paved road. And surely it just gets worse in the forest.

Were you the guy with the 2 trail dogs? Sorry we just missed you.

Two of us rode up buzzard & ridge to meet Dave & crew at upper toolbox. We finished berms & drains & clean-up in Flow segments 1 & 2.

Work Day on the the new connections at Granite Bay.

Copied from Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship email.

Hi All - We are pleased to announce that the long awaited Center Trail and Granite Bay Multiuse Trail project has been approved! This 1.5 year project will address many of the eroded areas on the highly used trails at Folsom Lake SRA:
    - Reroute the existing Center Trail in Winter/Spring 2018 (Phase 1)
    - Reroute several sections of the Multiuse Trail in Fall 2018 (Phase 2); and
    - Restore/rehabilitate other sections of the Multiuse Trail in Winter 2019 (Phase 3)

Phase 1 will start on Sat Jan 20 and Sun Jan 21 as volunteers move remove brush from the new Center Trail corridor. Sun Jan 21 will be a tentative day pending how much work gets done on Saturday.

Use this link to RSVP and volunteers will need to RSVP so we can ensure headcount: https://sierratrails.org/event/grani...january-20-21/

Our cap is at 30 volunteers for each work day and work will last about four hours per day. We will meet at the Granite Bay Beach parking lot at 10am. We encourage people to carpool together to Granite Bay. When you get to the Granite Bay entrance, let the Parks staff know you are there for trail work and you will receive a day pass.

Volunteers will be moving pre-sawed branches and cut trees from the new trail corridor and staging next to the existing trail for eventual decommission. Work will be done with Parks, Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, FATRAC, TBF Racing, high school mountain bike team teens and other multiuser volunteers interested in participating. We'd like to see everyone out there working together!

The work is in HIGH POISON OAK areas so volunteers need to wear long sleeve shirts, gloves, pants, sturdy closed toe shoes (no sandals) and use anti-poison oak ointments (bring your own) to protect themselves. Those highly allergic to poison oak are discouraged from working on these days.

In March and April, Phase 1 will continue as State Parks will break ground on the new trail. At that time, more volunteer days will occur then to move dirt and perform trail finish work.

We look forward to seeing you on Jan 20 and 21.

    Thank you.

Lime Ridge trail work, April 21st, 2018

Forwarded from the WCOSF Trail Committee ...

    ==========
The Walnut Creek Open Space (Shell Ridge, Lime Ridge, Sugarloaf and Acalanes Ridge) is over 2700 acres of natural landscape that provides a protected habitat for wildlife/plants and recreation opportunities for us all. The Open Space Foundation and the City of Walnut Creek will be sponsoring at least two trail maintenance days this year. Trail maintenance is an opportunity for equestrians, hikers, plant and animal lovers, dog walkers and cyclists to give back to the community by helping to maintain and improve our Open Space trails. I encourage you to sign up for this important work!

Thanks to those of you who have already signed up!

The two days planned for this year are:
Saturday April 21st (Earth Day weekend) from 8:30-Noon at Lime Ridge
Saturday June 2nd (National Trails Day) time/location tbd

How to sign up for April 21st:
    1. Just fill out and submit the form. We will contact you in mid-April with more info!

These volunteer days will be a fun and rewarding opportunity to work next to your fellow community members. They are also a great way for teens to get in their volunteer service hours. Come join us and spend half a day in the fresh air to help take care of our Open Space!
    ==========

Went down Cinderella at JMP today and there were many posted signs warning of trail work to be done on that trail next Saturday (4/7).

Does anyone know who is organizing and what the general plan is?

We were hoping one part would be to cut back the broom that is growing out into the trail...

I've done a few trail crew days at JMP and could maybe have my arm twisted into helping out. Last few times it was BTCEB but I don't see anything about this one on their meetup/website.

Yes! Pulling out the broom is the primary goal!
Yes! You can come! We would love your help!
Yes! There will be pizza and beverages!
We are working between 9:00 and 1:00

For 10 years, I've been pulling the broom out of JMP. I've decided to step up the effort by buying pizza and drinks. I contacted some of the BTCEB crew and they agreed to help put the word out. The Oakland High School Composite Team has also signed up to help. My plan is to sponsor one trail work day per month, in JMP, this summer. I'm not sure if it's going to be an official thing? But please put the first Saturday of the month on your calendar. Lets see how big this gets and how much change we can make!

The BTCEB Facebook page says "Meet at the top of Cinderella Trail. Wear long pants, long-sleeve shirt, sturdy shoes. Carry water. Lunch will be provided afterward. RSVP."

Nothing about specific areas, aside from the comment above about pulling broom.

We pulled a ton of broom out April 7th. The weather kept the crowds home, but the soft ground made the project really easy.

We will be out again the first Saturday of May, the 5th. Please come out and lend a hand or just stop by on your ride and say hello.

I’d love to make this a monthly thing until Cinderella is totally clear of broom and then switch to another part of the park. Pencil in the first Saturday and check BTCEB to rsvp.

    Thanks!!

    Auburn SRA 4/21/18 @8am

Some dirt work to be done in Auburn SRA this Saturday, April 21 (Earth Day). FATRAC will bring tools... they need about 15 people.

    From Auburn SRA:

10-15 volunteers spilt between the two work sites would be ideal. We will be meeting at 8am at the gravel parking turnout by the CXT restroom just across Old Foresthill Bridge at the confluence (parking area at the end of Confluence Trail). I envision working for 4-5 hours. If you know of individuals willing to volunteer that are able to assist me in leading a group that would be great as I will be overseeing both work sites.

Confluence Trail: Widening a 200 ft. segment that runs along a steep drop-off near the end of the trail and, if time permits, opening up some the existing drainages along the trail that have filled with sediment.

Clementine Trail: 300 ft. section where the Clementine Trail narrows due to a previous landslide. We will be re-establishing proper outslope and removing some of the rocks that protrude into the trail tread and filling the voids with some native material located near the work site. The idea would be to make that section more accommodating to users of all skill levels.

    -----------

FATRAC will provide tools/gloves... but please wear good footwear, bring water and snacks, sunscreen, etc.

Just jumping in here so I can be reminded of this as a possible drawing card.

If you come out as an individual to a volunteer trail work day at Henry W Coe SP I'd be your contact person; for groups that's handled by staff. In the dim times the Coe TWDs were advertised at MTBR with fair to good results; then staff re-specified how we had to build/maintain trails and we lost a lot of MTBer interest. The last couple of times it was zilch from MTBR posting. From my own research on MTBers that ride Coe only about 1 in 4 pay attention to this website. I've temporarily given up on MTBR in this regards.

Also in the dim times there were around 10 regularly scheduled public-invited TWDs at Coe every year; we hosted only 3 this year. I've experimented with advertising only at Coe's lending-a-hand and then additionally at the 2 Coe FB pages. Got complaints that one-week's notice on FB wasn't enough and then when I gave 2 weeks still little more than "regrets"!

BTW when there is an active TWD event at Coe it shows up in the sidebar of each and every webpage.

FWIW we have about 60 internal volunteer TWDs annually at Coe---most of these are mid-week though.

I also might try using Meetup one of these times.

I think there's just too may channels to get the word out on; a certain critical mass just isn't being reached on any of them.

This Saturday is National Trails Day.

What's going on? Things I know of:

Sutro Stewards in SF 1st Sat + National Trails Day -- sold out, waitlist at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/nationa...ts-45746854072

Quarry Park, El Grenada (Half Moon Bay), Saturday @ 8AM.
Coastside MTB + SVMTB + Trail Center + San Mateo County Parks.
Show up to this one so San Mateo Country Parks sees Mountain Bikers doing work, there's some interesting things in the pipeline! Also don't be late, there are shuttles to the work area and they claim not to be running them after sign-in time (8:30). Dress for PO?

What else? I don't have time this second to dig for more.

Y'all come on up and see! We just put about a bizillion hours into it and more are coming. What you'll find now already is that the berms flow. We improved the height and radii as much as possible within building constraints and that's already a huge difference in how it rides. The drainage features require quite a bit more fine tuning in shape and placement and that will be happening more gradually as Hoot's schedule allows. This will improve flow. You may find that a few sections don't do that quite yet.

We expect bike traffic to increase quite a bit so expect to have to yield to more riders coming back uphill since so many don't care to ride the road or the Casci loop back up. Scotts also has a small but dedicated cadre of hikers and runners. Unless an uphill rider pulls off to obviously yield to you then yield to them. Even if a pedestrian steps off, slow down to say hi and thank them. It's nice and it feels good.

NID bought us a whole bunch of gravel and we are putting it into the mucky stretch. It's not a long term solution but will get us through a couple of seasons until we can potentially reroute it completely.

    Enjoy our selfish pleasures!

Once again, MBOSC has a stacked schedule for the Winter. I'm looking forward to working on SDF. We've got a tradition of buffing out Flow Trail every dig season, and this year's date is 2/24/2019. Hope to see some of you out there!

    Dirt Dig Demo Forrest 2/24/2019

And here's our fb event page for it.

Outside of that, I'm working on finding a date to work on some trails closer to home, such as Santa Teresa.

    Dig it!

    Lars,
Looked at the FB and MBOSC pages and wondering if there is a sign up for supporting this, or just show up? Demo is pretty much in my backyard and I'd like to support this. I can probably bring 3-4 additional bodies, as well. Thanks for posting this!

Sign up will be through MBOSC's site. Sign up however isn't open yet. MBOSC's site says it should open up around 2 weeks before the event

MORCA does Fort Ord trail work every 3rd Saturday. Flat head shovels are useful for the sand. I asked about Toro trailwork at the last Ford Ord day and they said it's in limbo right now. Maybe someone else here has other Toro info but that's the official word.

    "When: Sat, January 19, 9am – 1pm
Where: 8th Street and Gigling Avenue (map)
Description: We will be performing trail work. Specific details to be determined. Please bring gloves, wear long pants and long sleeved shirts (recommended) and closed toe shoes (no sandals). Bring snacks and water, hats and sun screen are recommended. .

Trail work will wrap up around 1 PM and lunch will be provided."
