    The Tool thread

Yes, another NorCal foray into the off-topic world of music. If you're angry and you want to post about actual TOOLS, go right ahead. But this is about the band Tool, who is about to release an album, the first in 10,000 years (or so it seems).

Any fans out there on the NorkAl board?

    Another thread here.

Is it all just one long percussion solo now?

Lateralus is the last one I really liked. It seems their recent music is melting into one long slow sound experiment that loses all cohesion, with a couple exceptions.

Love Tool. Feel very fortunate to have seen them during both the Opiate, Undertow, and Aenima tours aka back when they used to play more than 3 songs per show, lol.

I told my daughter when we saw them at Aftershock to prepare for a 3 song blended together jamfest with Maynard hiding at the back of the stage. She didn't believe me, but when it came true, she was completely dissapointed. Hopefully this album will be a return to their former glory!

Don't know why this is in the California forum, though.

    Yes

October 13 Tool is playing the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento. Not sure who else is on the bill and I'd imagine they're heavily promoting the new album.

-Kinda why i'm reluctant to go to any Festival-type shows anymore.
    Gimme the FULL SET!!!

Anyhow, i don't think it will be a return to fomer glory as you wish.
The whole thing is 7 Songs and like 85 minutes! Pretty much ALL gonna be epic jams.

I fail to see how this has anything to do with riding mountain bikes in Northern California, especially when the OP linked to a duplicate thread in the OC where this discussion belongs.

    So no.

Just pointing out that there is a designated place for these sorts of discussions that have nothing to do with the locality. Would you prefer the discussion of TOOL's music rather be in the Ohio Section of the site?

I wish I never listened to Fear Inoculum. My level of excitement for the complete album has drastically diminished. They're not rocking like they're in their 20's anymore

Sorry for being subtle. What I meant was threads like this aren't exactly uncommon in the Norcal forum. Why not let FC and the local mod handle it?

But feel free to put all things Tool-related in the Ohio forum, if that's really a thing.

That’s the rumor, I heard it’s about some dolphins that were crossbred with the lynx in the Arctic, it’s heavy.

Might not have made the album though

TOOL is from L.A. so F that on sight and you guys sound like a bunch of Dads who had 3 1/2 Bud Lites. I didn't mean to Poem.

I might start a thread about the new Tomb Mold that's about to drop.

P.S. they are playing in Oakland this month but the room only holds about 150 - get tix now. @ Elbo Room OK carry on

Someone get this hothead outta here.

FC, can you explain to me, in NorCal, why a moderator on your site is actively trying to stop people from posting on it? Do you not get paid on ad impressions, which presumably are accumulated through people clicking on threads like this? I keep seeing this deja vu of moving threads, trying to redirect people to other boards, closing threads, why? It's been explained many times that the MTBR NorCal board is a community, in NorCal, whose interests may go outside the realm of MTB. If people want to branch out to other boards they will, they don't need to be bothered and annoyed in their own threads.

Yes, and they've gone a bit prog. it's not my fave genre, but in person it's pretty immense. There are dozens if not hundreds of underground blackened death bands with a hint of interstellar prog touring small clubs right now. Yes, I realize I'm Virtue-Signaling, but get out to local shows and hit the merch table for riding jerseys.

Maybe we should remove all those other sections, completely remove the OC so all the non-MTB content can be posted in the Regional MTB Sections?

Perhaps we should also get rid of the Wheels n tires section, the Brakes section and other components section so that too can be discussed in the Regional Boards?

Please do explain how you would better organize the site to make threads on specific topics easier to find?

Really, why do we have any other sections outside of the Regional boards if the intent is to have all content included in the community?

    Hey Klurejr:

I've done the Mod thing before and I know it's a rough "job", but honestly, this kind of discussion in a regional board where people actually know each other is not the end of the world. This is not the Official MTBR stance on Tool (the band), sorry Finch!

I don't think NorCal is in any fear of being overrun with OTs or sidebar conversations of other potentially board relevant discussions given fcs and 50 cents routine presence.

Just a thought, it actually makes your life a bit easier to let them keep an eye on us NorCal yahoos. Cheers!

I understand that, just asking users to consider where the line should be drawn, or if they even think one should be drawn....

Does MTBR really need 2 Threads to discuss TOOL's new album? Maybe it does, maybe the site will really benefit from having a TOOL new Album thread in the OC and one in NORCAL.
Maybe this site really needs a thread to discuss the Album in 4 or 5 more regional sections.....

I don't see it, but perhaps someone who is posting here can.

Well if you've spoken to FC get off your high horse and stop closing threads in the norcal forum and stop whining about duplicate posts. This website has like 400 forums. There's going to be some duplicates. All I know is that in the past week I've seen you come to this forum and do a good amount of stupid shit and run your mouth.

Aw, man. I didn't think this would turn into a shit-on-Klurejr thread. Yes, there are (at least) 2 Tool threads and I started them both (except for the Ohio one ) I just know there are a LOT of Tool fans out there, and after I posted in the OC, I wanted to hear from my local homies as well.

    Finally got home and listened.

Exactly what I thought it would be. IMO, their songs are falling apart and losing cohesion by stretching out without any common theme or melody. It's boring. It's no Parabol(a). There's a lot of energy put into it, but no energy comes out. It's a bunch of chords and rhythms stitched together, but not a "song". It used to be special.

^ I kind of felt the same at first, but it definitely grew on me the more I listened to it. I'm trying not to be too critical of it until I've spent some time listening to the whole album.

On the phone.... . Many of us have been to his house. FYI - Most of the characters responding in this thread predate this iteration of MTBR by some years. Harking back to the old MTBR dates.

The drums by themselves are a melody.

    Hey Picard,
Every Tool album is in the top 20 of the billboard 200 right now.

Ironically, music on vinyl from the 60s and 70s! Hendrix, Dylan, Traffic, Floyd.....

Interestingly, both he and my daughter listen to music that originates from YouTube and other social media. Most of this music is homegrown. Many of their friends do the same. It's an interesting time of the music industry.

We're too old to read the logos of the good, current, underground bands (throw handful of twigs on ground), but that said, I am going to see a band in Oakland this Sunday night whose name contains both TOOL and OLD. Well those letters in order, anyway. How's that for coincidental. Anyone got a guess as to the name of the band?

Does MTBR really need 2 Threads to discuss TOOL's new album? Maybe it does, maybe the site will really benefit from having a TOOL new Album thread in the OC and one in NORCAL.
Maybe this site really needs a thread to discuss the Album in 4 or 5 more regional sections.....

I don't see it, but perhaps someone who is posting here can.

On average, that's ONE TooL thread every ~ 6.5 years. Do MTBR mods really need to whine about that?

The whole album is available from their youtube channel as of late last night, here is the playlist:

    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...oFr6MtTX92HxyR

Surely I can't be the only one who thought "OMG NEW TOOL FINALLY" then sat through a few songs and just went "meh." The band sounds exactly the same as they did 13 years ago and the songs are good but I think it needs more listens before it grows on me. I am clearly in the minority though as those who are hardcore Tool fans are crying tears of joy all across the internetz right now, but as a more casual fan, "meh." I'll give it more listens though before I rule the album out for good.

You're not the only one. I am very underwhelmed as well. Great sound and drums as usual, no real lyrics to speak of so far. This is garbage.

I've enjoyed the bits and pieces of what I've heard so far. The more I listen to it the more I enjoy it. I don't think this will be my favorite album but its better than 99.99% of all the other crap that's being produced these days. Very thankful to have new music from Tool in 2019. I didn't think we would ever see the day, but here it is.

Final thoughts after first time through. Its good, but not groundbreaking for them. Some rehash of riffs and beats for sure. I'll buy it and put 2 or 3 songs on rotation with some trimming. Sorry if I want to listen to one of their songs for 15 minutes, I'll go see them in concert I wouldn't call it "meh", I would call it about what I expected since I have seen them many times in concert and they seemed to be moving more and more in this direction for the last few shows I saw.

Listened to at least all songs 1 time now, a few twice, and it definitely is better on the second listen, there's a few songs I like. Still though I guess the "meh" part was that after 13 years I expected they would have had some exceptional song ideas that are extremely catchy and memorable, but out of the 7 official cd tracks you got one drum solo track, one that is basically a guitar solo, and 5 songs that are all good but 10+ minutes long that drag on that are (to me) missing that specialness that would have me as excited as I should be for new tool.

With that being said I am disappointed that I missed out on the opportunity to buy this amazing deluxe edition, looks like some places were selling them for over $70 but cool for the novelty. I still will probably get the regular cd version:

Actually I think 2019 has been a good year in music. A lot of metal fans seem to be stoked because in one year Tool, slipknot, korn, rammstein, and probably a few older metal bands that I am forgetting have all released or will release albums. Also, the Black Keys have a new album which has some classic rock vibes and there's been other alternative artists that i've enjoyed right now. Even in the 90's and 2000's when hard rock was mainstream there was still stuff out there like the backstreet boys or britney spears, so just like before there is good and bad stuff out there. You may have to dig deeper, but there is plenty of good stuff out there.

Actually, scrolling though the album again super quickly I realize its pretty good and nothing wrong with it, its just something that needs to grow on me rather than be like "man this is amazing!" the first time through. I think the long song times aren't helping my attempts to bond with the album. Fear innoculum, pneuma, invincible, and descending (edit and culling voices) are all good! The other filler tracks I'm still not sold on. After some more listening this may grow to have some of my favorite tool songs, but again the song lengths are kinda killing it for me...

I'm not expecting to be overwhelmed, I just need some new Tool. Just found out that the copy I had pre-ordered from the last record store in Santa Rosa was available, all they needed was my mother's maiden name, my ZIP code, my cock size, and who I voted for, and it was mine. I'll open it in the store so everyone can see, I asked the guy if he had seen the packaging, and he said everybody grabbed theirs and ran out. They had a line at the store entrance this morning, and they had to turn a lot of people away because they only got a few copies. Pre order, baby!

Oh, and the new Rammstein is pretty lethargic. They are getting mellower with age. Bummer. Hast. Du Hast. Dammit.

    Caw, caw!

Edit: That opening of the CD is pretty lame. Plus, she has Man Hands.

I've gone from end to end 5 times now. The title track is probably my favorite but that's probably also due to the fact that I've been listening to it all month long. Other than that there aren't really any standout tracks that really catch my attention.

Never been a fan of the other mainstream metal like korn, rammstein, or slipknot but I'll be waiting for Immolation and Nile to hopefully come out with some new stuff soon.

I listened, it's ok. They need to improve on their Holy Diver formula, which btw is one of the best metal songs ever, period.
