    The tanks of UC

On the fireroad above Emma McRary Flow Trail, there are four water tanks that have art that seem to change with time.

If you have any photos, post them here and include the date the photo was taken.

They seem to chronicle memorable points in time.

One the biggest regrets in my life was not asking an SC art student to buy her original painting of this iconic structure. She was just finishing up and it was back when the art on the actual tanks were pretty rad…that would've been a sweet decroment (made that word up) to my man cave.
I'm not sure how this works.

If that's your biggest regret in life, you doin ok.

Yes, the art has changed from ghetto cool to social statements. There was a bummer period with a lot of words. But the recent art says there's hope.

I have about 100 different tank photos already. Let's see if we can add to it then I'll share the goods.

Here's one taken on 5/11/13. I thought the graffiti was cool until a friend told me that it looked like a giant dick and balls. Now I don't really like this pic. Not sure why I haven't deleted it but now I'm showing it to you all.

    I'll play:

That's nativeson rolling through the scene; riding independently we had played leapfrog (he was having mechanicals and I was trimming brush) coming up Emma and we both stopped here for a breather.

I used to go by this spot every month or so while my daughter was going to UC; she graduated and my visits to SC became much less frequent. I had always regretted not documenting the ever-changing art so this time I made sure I got it covered from every angle.

My buddy pointed out to me that there seems to be an anti-bike message in the current artwork, as posted by cornifish. "everybody run" and "BMX not special". Like mountain bikes (BMX) are terrorizing the forest animals. Anybody else catch that?

Nope. It seems very pro bike in fact. Rider is whipping it, having fun with the rest of the trail representatives.

The bike is built by Alliance Bicycles in Hailey, Idaho. This picture was before the 142 x 12 rear triangle but it looks 99% the same. 110mm rear travel with a 120mm Pike. I am bumping up the Pike to 130mm at some point but in no particular hurry as the bike is unbelievably good as it is. alliancebicycles.com

The caption on that bmx pic used to say "bmx not spandex". It was changed to "bmx not special" later on. All the happy critters were added later, as well.

Thanks for the hummingbird pic. That's one of my all time faves.

I have some tank art buried in a folder somewhere, can't find em now. But I'd like to add these from a somewhat nearby location. Are there other locations in SC for great public art?

The bridge/catwalks I assume? Yeah, big gap drop if you went straight, a steep ramp into a series of bermed turns if you went left. the main bridge was up about 10-15 feet over redwood stumps. Took me 3 tries to sack up and ride it the first time. Too bad it didn't last long.

Right on!! Since I have about 100 photos now, many with positive dates, I can tell when a new entry photo was taken.

The cool thing is the tank art usually changes one at a time wo one can see the transition.

Schit, I can even make a movie!!

    Great stuff!!

I am curious as to whether there is some agreed upon time frame or unwritten rule as to how long before a mural can be painted over? I could see some testy situations arising.

The new art is worthy. It might be gone by tomorrow though so get there.

Great thread. Had never noticed it until today. I usually ride UC 1-2t times per week. I'll have to start taking photos of the tanks. I do enjoy seeing the artwork change...

Had some friends in town from LA that I was showing around UCSC. One asked just as we were riding up to the barrels, 'why do I keep seeing all these keep Santa Cruz Weird shirts.'

    I don't know.....

I beg to differ with Clarice; that's the life cycle of the monarch butterfly (for which Santa Cruz esp. Natural Bridges SP are famous for)

Those are sweet, but he painted over one of my favorite ones a few days after they were painted...

I feel like I've seen the caterpillar into butterfly before but if it didn't make it into the mtbr gallery it must have never existed.

Chido needs a spot on the upper tanks and take his rest *there* not show up like a tag over other people's artwork. I dunno, maybe she asks permission but I doubt it.

The dog ties the whole thing together. And, I might be wrong, but I think that's Sammy, Jenna's dog. She's a local rider (and cancer survivor) that has done some of the tank art for a few years.

    No butterfly before.

The artists told me there's no system of permissions here. Just paint over someone else’s when it's time. Hitting one tank or partial tanks works very well.
