Hmmm. Maaaaybee...What time do you think you and the fun bunch might be reaching Santa Rosalia? I'd come up from the Aptos side.

Woke up this morning and it's pretty smoky around me (Old Santa Cruz Hwy) so I'm assuming Demo is pretty thick, as well. Hopefully it blows out by Sunday to have some clear air for climbing...

FC, with all your pull and influence, maybe you you can make some calls and have the area evac壇 and barricaded so we can have the forest to ourselves.

Looking forward to meeting and riding with you all. Met FC in Noah痴 Bagels years back but never had the pleasure of riding with him.

    Smoke Radar Map

Been looking for a good smoke map this morning...finally found this one, adjustable time lapse and mcg/m3 also if you do some clicking.

    https://esrimedia.maps.arcgis.com/ap...09dab6d0003a38

Looks like its based on NWS data. Santa Cruz is going to get hammered by smoke tonight but clearing tomorrow. This does not reflect 'near-surface' smoke... I think NWS has another map for that.

According to this tool, everything will be jacked tomorrow. Hard to say, so we will see. I won't ride if the smoke is bad.

P100 is preferable. Living in salt lake during the winter this is all too familiar... 3m makes a good one with filters for about 30-40 bucks.

I also have P100, but pretty laboring to breathe with exertion such as climbing.

After further reading and research, all recommendations say avoid being outside, and don稚 exercise with any mask. If you must exercise, find a gym with hepa filtration and ride a stationary.

The top filter is after running under 20 hours in a closed up house with a separate hepa air purifier running. Bottom is obviously new.

Lots of crap in the air!

On the inlet side of a cheap box fan.

    Stay safe!

Would you mind posting his opinion of how that respirator worked? As a house painter, I have those, but I was not sure if it would work riding, besides feeling like a kook. I sometimes roll a respirator for 5-6 hours straight. A close shave in the am helps.

I live in this area and I知 always very early to rise. Summit Rd is about 5 min away so I値l take drive up early in the AM and take a sniff test and post back here what I think.

I can tell you right now that I live up the mountain and spent about 15 running the leaf blower to clear all the Redwood needles from my roof and rain gutters and I can feel the impact the smoke has had on me. Granted, I知 pretty sensitive, but still...

I値l be up on Summit before light sniffing around and give an update. I値l do another when the light shows up, but I知 not optimistic about tomorrow.

Ok, at this point, I think we're gonna have to cancel. My two data maps are saying AQI readings of 200 near Demo Forest and near Emma Trail, right by the water. Webcams are saying the same too.

Our guest is Ryan Leech! He's driving right now from Bend, OR. He might just go to Reno right now or he might sleep at my house and we'll just drink beer.

There is a possibility that I'll call an 11am ride tomorrow if the wind picks up and clears this out. Stay tuned for that.

    But for now...

32 miles at Ft Ord today. The sky was grey, and the air quality was poor, but not as bad as Santa Cruz.

For a group event, probably a best practice to have cancelled.

I rode numerous days in the CARR fire mess. Probably should not have. I wore an N95 mask 2 or 3 days. one day I went to a trail that was not burned for therapy. I needed to see one of the 2 unburnt trails and green trees and tall weeds. Visibility that day was less than 1/2 mile. Depending on elevation, it could have been less.

I am responsible for myself, not a group. Some are sensitive, some are not. I rarely felt any eye irritation and never really felt lung issues. I am not saying they didn't occur, just saying I didn't FEEL affected by it.

Glad to hear ya'll are postponing until a better day. If it's anything like fires up north, it may be a couple weeks, depending on wind shifts, before the air quality meters read more towards the healthy/safe zones.

Good luck. Hope you get to ride. Maybe by then you'll see rain. I hear rain in the forecast for a week out (not sure how much, or how wide spread though). Fingers crossed for you all.

We drove down to SLO for the day today and the air was much better than the South Bay. Visually it was hazy but the smoke wasn稚 bothering me like in San Jose.

Up at Summit/San Jose Soquel Road right now and it's still very smoky smelling in the dark. Wind is up right now, but hard to say if it's going to blow out smoke or keep bring it in.

I'll give a visual report when I see some light a little later. Time to head home and grab a cup of coffee.

Wind is starting to clear out some smoke, but I知 out for this morning. I知 going to suit up this afternoon and come scout the top of the mountain to see if it痴 cleared out.

Ok, the ride is BACK ON!!!! 10:30 at the Upper Demo Forest Parking lot.

Air is clearing and the ground is warming. It is much better today than yesterday. I had a few friends ride Demo yesterday and they said it's better in the mountains.

So back on. Arrive a 10:30 ride 15-20 minutes later.

I'm not gonna make it. Been fighting a cold all week anyways cant risk being sick for business trip for work for next 3 days. Plus I'll probably ride like crap because of it.

I値l be there at 10:30 to meet you guys and see how it feels for me. Literally just got back home from driving within 10min of the trailhead. The Demo Forest is still sitting in smoke but winds are gusting up to 40 across summit rd so it will probably keep clearing. See you there. I値l be the fat boy on a Sentinel.

Your now living in an area that supports riding year round and when the weather gets shitty and cold, that means snow is falling and there's something better to do.

Get well and we'll get you on rides in the area.

Aw maan. I missed out! I have been doing Ryan Leech's yoga vids for I don't know - 3 or 4 years now?! He's great! I get all out of whack riding, and those vids put me back together again.

Great group of guys and a great ride. I'm pretty high on the introvert scale and usually avoid group rides with strangers, but I'm glad I put that aside and got out to meet you all.

One other thing I'll mention is....When FC says, "Ron's coming", pay attention. Wasn't sure what it meant and really meant nothing to me the other day. Now, it means everything.

Ron set up a mobile kitchen in the lot and cooked for hours making course after course filling us all with amazing and delicious food. He is truly generous with his time and food and not something I'll soon forget.

Ron, thanks for sharing your time and food with us and know we are truly grateful.

FC, thanks for getting group together and motivating us to get out even though the air looked pretty crappy up the mountain.

    Great to meet you all.

    Good times...

Was going to skip riding this weekend with all the smoke, but this group ride (and improving air quality) was enough to get me out. It was a blast! Just want to say thanks to all, it was great meeting everyone, and special thanks to fc for organizing! So bummed I missed loop 2 and the food after, but will try to catch up with you all next time. Ron, hats off, man, you really do it right!!! Taking tailgating to a new level!

Just got a couple shots, one with the big guy....

We did cussacks flow Braille. Full speed on the chunder dust as we chased the smoke away.

As I followed Ron, Ryan and Travis in Braille, it was art. It was the perfect ride but we forgot about it after hours of hanging out at the lot

    Amazing day with new friends.

The 170 travel Wreck was good for the climbs

Right on man. Soooooo good to meet you. Thanks for scouting it out in the morning.

You're a great rider and a good dude. And to do 2 laps is a tall order on a day like that. I'm glad you really stayed for the post-ride. That's really where bonds are formed and we get to know each other. Thanks for the jacket as that was carhart legit!!!

Ron has 4 kids so he doesn't get to come out a lot. But there are many more dudes and dudettes that are so generous and friendly.

    Here's the Shamis

    Shinjohn. Very cool to meetcha.

So Ron was late so I set up the bike I brought for him. Turns out he was shopping at The Summit Store and spending hundreds of his own $$ just for the group.
