Smoke on the Mendocino Coast is horrible!

The coastal air quality is the worst I've seen it in years. Do to easterly winds blowing smoke from the Camp Fire our air quality at the moment is "Unhealthy" w/ an AQI at 163. If you plan to come here to ride this weekend you might want to reconsider until the air quality shifts back to its boring normal.

yep--east bay is even worse----interesting how fast it covered the 150 miles--significantly worse than the santa rosa fire smoke here---but lets be thankful it is only smoke---I fear a fire like this in the santa cruz mnts someday

I’m at the end of a cold and the smoke is irritating the hell out of my tender nasal passages. Man, I hope we get some moisture soon to reduce the fire danger. Scary to see how fast an entire town can be devastated by an out of control fire.

For once, Tahoe is actually ok. There's a bit of a haze over the lake but other than that nothing noticeable. C'mon up and ride!

Up at Summit/San Jose Soquel Road right now and it's still very smoky smelling in the dark. Wind is up right now, but hard to say if it's going to blow out smoke or keep bring it in.

I'll give a visual report when I see some light a little later. Time to head home and grab a cup of coffee.

Drove thru Sth shore yesterday on way to ride in Carson Valley. Total smoke free ride there. Heading back to Sth shore today and ride Tahoe Mtn on way back to the Bay Area.

Felton this morning is looking way better today than yesterday. The sky is actually blue! Maybe there is a faint smoke smell. But almost indetectable.

Mountain View is a million times better today. Mostly blue skies, smoke smell this morning but it's gone now. Probably gonna do a road ride later today, counting on it clearing up more.

    Better coastal air

The air quality has improved by 60% over Fridays horrible smoke. Friday's AQI was 169. Today it was 62. Currently, it is now even lower at 49. We are somewhat back to normal "Good" air. Although, the air in the Mendocino Woodlands totally sucked. With the high pressure bad air is now trapped in the valleys.

Winter is here! I woke to 34° w/ frost everywhere.

We are now back to our refreshingly boring air quality at 18. My heart goes out to all those who have been affected by the Camp Fire.

I saw this after being out of the general area and was hoping things had cleared up by the “coastal influences” while I was hiding out up in the Sierras. But back home in SonoMo Cty I see it’s not the case, yet.

If it doesn’t rain soon then these won’t be the last fires of the season, I fear. It was positively creepy weather in Berkeley yesterday. Powerfully gusting Diablo winds, leaves flying everywhere, just waiting for a spark. The same weather as the big 1991 fire, which set some records that have been broken this year and last, but less hot.

The rain is coming. As is typical for around here, we may go from OMG will it ever rain again straight into OMG does it ever do anything but rain here?

that's a pretty good graphic. Even if we only get a half or a third of that forecast, it would still be the jackpot.

I'm certainly praying we get any amount of rain. The forecast usually wildly overshoots. Hopefully, this is not the case.

Might be a soggy T-day ride, but I'll gladly take cause we needz da rain.

That’s the most bizarre “sunrise” I’ve ever seen from the West Coast. Is there a sister city in China named Capitola

before i saw this thread, i was thinking about starting one asking how many of us ride in this infernal wildfire smoke and how you deal with it.

i rode on saturday, then had the allergy attack (or something like that) from hell on saturday. felt fine during and immediately following after the ride.

i'd also hoped to get at least one week-night spin in this week, but for god's sake it looks like there's light fog in san francisco due to the smoke. when one thinks about what's in that smoke...

never mind riding this coming weekend. i'm going train chasing.

Looking at this prediction model, it looks like air quality might be bad for more than a few days.

    Air Quality Update 11/17/18

Lately the air has gotten much better here on the coast. Current AQI is
holding at 41 or "GOOD". Yesterday we got as low as 29 AQI so we rode for 4 hours w/ no problems. By the end of the ride it had gone back to Moderate at 60 AQI.

Word to the wise: Do not come to the coast unless you call ahead for reservations as everyone from the Bay Area is looking for relief. One of the local Inns (Stanford) said they are overwhelmed with requests for reservations.

Trails are in great shape. Air will fluctuate in quality, but I don't anticipate we will have what we did last Friday (ride cancelled) at 168 AQI. Some whales are running at the moment. We think they are Pilot whales due to their smaller size and the proclivity to seek food in the tight inlets off the headlands. Saw one last week 50' below us as we walked the headlands trail. If my hips felt better and I was a little younger, I might have jump onto its back and gone for a ride. I have never been that close to a whale.... What a sight!

Also: Sweet Pea and Purple Skirt opening delayed until 11/26. JDSF has extended logging extraction another week. Equipment is still quite noticeable in the woods especially at the north end of Parallel Action. This segment of the trail has been obliterated! All of Parallel Action is closed until further notice. The west end of PA will be rideable when open as the loggers did a great job opening a trail from EOP to the confluence of Gas Tank. Topper is GONE! JDSF has given us the GREEN light to begin putting in a 3 mile trail in May 2019 east of Rd 408 to connect to Manly Gulch from the bottom of Topper. It may be the first machine built trail we get. Fingers crossed.
