Where did you go, what did you get done and what did you love?

I didn't love almost hitting this rattler.

Whenever you see a rattler, every stick looks like a snake for a few months. You start to brake check every sighting of a stick.

I had my first ever ride at UCSC. Fun to ride up EMT, and then make my way down to the Poop Chute. Thought I saw a ranger at the bottom, across 9, so I hightailed it back uphill. I trekked down a few minutes later and he and his truck were gone. I saw a fit-looking guy, who also looked homeless and smelled like cigarettes, zipping down EMT on a bike. Everyone should get exercise!

Hoots and Scottís Flat Loop with son and his friend. These trails have had quite a bit of hype, and even in dry / blown out conditions, they did not disappoint! Super fun, flowy, and well put together! I will be attempting to recreate some of the magic locally on my trail. Always cool to ride new trails for inspiration!

Sometimes as a dad you know when to keep the stoke going. I offered to let them DH Hoots for second lap and pick them up at the bottom. It was awesome to see them smiling and high-fiving at the end.

You know what else didnít disappoint? Treats in Nevada City. Do yourself a favor and get the Honey Vanilla in a double scoop waffle cone! Seriously maybe the best ice cream I have ever had in my life, and Iíve eaten a lot of ice cream

Hope everyone had a bad ass day full of flowy singletrack!

Oh, and I will be getting that pic of my son after his OTB digger blown up and framed twice, one for me and one for him. He tried to connect one of the bigger doubles and didnít quite clear the back wheel. It was both spectacular and horrifying to watch, as the dad, but he sprung back up like a champ. I could see it impact his riding though. He was ALOT more cautious after that lol!

Today was an out and back from Monte Bello OSP to Lake Ranch Reservoir in Sanborn County Park. It started out unexpectedly cold, breezy and foggy:

PSA: Fallen tree on White Oak Trail. I cleared some the smaller branches so it was easier to get through but it still required a dismount:

New sign - officially sanctioned trail braiding on the Canyon Trail:

The turn around point, Lake Ranch Reservoir:

On the way back I made a detour to see the new Castle Rock State Park Visitor Center:

There used to be a Christmas tree farm on this site.

It's pretty nice. There is a booth for docents, EV charging stations and most importantly, a drinking fountain:

(The only other water stops I know of along this part of Skyline is the Gap Calfire station and Alpine Pond.)

Well, the entrance sign could be made easier to read :-/

A few landscapes from the end of the ride:

    Long live long rides

Wow such a difference in conditions! It was sunny and dry in the foothills though the subtle crisp hint of fall could just be felt lingering a few centimeters ahead of the front caliper. It will be here before you know it ...

There is an ironman in Santa Cruz on Sunday.

Depending where you're coming from, roads might be closed.

Someone put big branches to block a couple of berms on the 7 Springs trail at Fremont Older. I saw one and avoided it, but hit the other one and nearly crashed because it wasn't easy to see because it was kinda camouflage in the shade. Some people not fond of MTB-ers.

I might put together a video but the Hero 7 Stabilization at night is not so hot. If I wasn't feeling it, it is probably not as much interest to others.

Prior to the night ride, I showed one my son's friends an easy way to loop the jump line. We did three laps, he was digging it!

    September 6-12, 2019 Weekly Ride Stories-img_e9687.jpg

Originally my buddy was going to go to try out his lights too, but he got busy and then too tired. So, I climbed up solo while it was light and waited at the top for it to get dark:

    September 6-12, 2019 Weekly Ride Stories-img_9686.jpg

I was using two of these, one on my bars (with diffuser to make it a horizontal bar) and one on my helmet (with standard glass aka spot light):

    https://www.amazon.com/Bright-Eyes-W...ef_=ast_bbp_dp

Started down just at twilight. Did Let's Get Rowdy, including the big drop. Immediately noticed I was riding in the back seat. Had to consciously shift my weight forward.

    Two major points:

#1 - One of these on your helmet makes it heavy and shifty. 1/2 way down I cinched my chin strap tight. I would never ride with it that tight normally but it was the only way I could keep it from sliding so far down it hindered my vision. Might look for a lighter version.

#2 - The other thing is the disconnect between where your bike is pointed, and therefore your bar light, and where you are looking / turning where your helmet light is pointing. You can really see this in one of the pictures below. Makes a helmet "spot" light absolutely necessary for any trail that has berms / corners!

    Here are some pics:

    September 6-12, 2019 Weekly Ride Stories-tree-turn.jpg

    September 6-12, 2019 Weekly Ride Stories-2nd-jump.jpg

I definitely enjoyed it. The thinner sections of the trail were harder to stay in alignment on. I know this trail like the back of my hand and that helped a ton. Riding a new trail blind with lights would be VERY tough for me currently, but I imagine you get better the more you do it. I look forward to getting out in the darkness more!

Okay, Iíll go again . Got home from work texted my son and his friend to go hit the jump line. His friend was already there. Max and I geared up and in 5 minutes weíre sitting at the base of the climb. We rode four loops and did our fair share of hootín and hollarín. Good times and they both loved it.

Got home (again) and put everything away ... just in time for my normal riding buddy texting that he wanted to try out his new night light set up. I wasnít feeling it, but I know the excitement, see post above, so decided to help a brother out. 10 mins later we were at the base of the long climb to the top of the hill. We both fired it no breaks and straight into Letís Get Rowdy, of course. So far itís still the best thing on the hill even after we have added some really good stuff, it still reigns supreme! The big drop is intimidating AF, I hit it, my buddy opted out. At night itís blind and you know itís big!

We then mixed it up and rode one of the normal climbs backwards which was actually a super fun DH. Wasnít a long loop ~5 miles, but hella fun! There well definitely be more. Ughh riding!

Sitting in the trailer listening to the showers outside. Snuck back to back rides just dodging the rain.
Just so happens a Santa Cruz resident pulls in next to us. Come to find out he knew one of my best friends before I even met him!
So I got Heckletooth yesterday and got Larison Rock today with Franz.

No riding today but weed whacked and dug. Met this proud Mama in the AM session. She has FOUR fawns. No way they were all hers:

    September 6-12, 2019 Weekly Ride Stories-b15452aa-0c59-40cd-a1dc-31045191057a.jpeg

PM session was a harbinger of things to come. I saw at least 10 riders in multiple groups on the trail ... It was bound to happen!

    September 6-12, 2019 Weekly Ride Stories-c06021d0-1d4f-4989-a851-d3608eea68e2.jpeg

Built a new optional feature / rock drop:

    September 6-12, 2019 Weekly Ride Stories-605e31f0-f823-44f6-ae41-71b5244fe557.jpeg

Ended up popping out of the system at the same time as the three guys in that picture popped out. All three were local and psyched. They said there was a bit of a buzz on the trail. Itís only going to get busier from here on out!

Not ride related but I was up at 3:30AM for reasons unknown to me. Just woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed. Of course MTB browsing began, which lead me to Enduro bikes, which lead me to the ongoing Canyon sale which includes the Strive CF for $4K.

This bike checks all my boxes and is well reviewed including several head to heads that give it top nods for bang for the buck component-wise and ride quality. I read several PB, MTBR, Enduro site/ posts. I am tearing my Farley EX 8 apart riding it beyond its technical specs and abilities, as evidence by my recent snapping of the bottom trunion mount bolt and the bike creaking from every joint, lol. I pondered...and pulled the trigger. Hopefully will get it soon and can post my thoughts on it if peeps are interested.

I am 6'1" with a 33" inseam which puts me in the Large range at the top end, so I wrestled with L versus XL. I ended up going with the Large based upon several other posts about sizing and fit with follow-ups after purchase. Canyons website also suggested Large, so I went with it, but of course am here second guessing myself.

Oh well, super stoked to get a new steed!

I was at the FedEx in Palo Alto yesterday and there were several Canyon boxes there. Must be the sale!

Iím in the same boat as you, right between L and XL in bikes and also clothes, which is a real pain in the ass!

    Congrats.

More dig this morning after the 7AM telecon. I have finished scratching in an extension to one of the flow segments. It will bring this segment from 0.5 miles to almost 1 mile in length. It's not the only flow in the system, but we are going all in on this stretch since it is the farthest away from the trailhead. Got to reward those people for persisting through the loop

The only thing that sucks about it is a one way ~3 mile / +~1,000' hike from my house before I can start working. And this is where the work really starts aka time to bench!

Iím in the same boat as you, right between L and XL in bikes and also clothes, which is a real pain in the ass!

    Congrats.
Yeah being in between the "normal sizes" really sucks, but I have ridden XLs and Ls back and forth and I think my body proportions actually do better on the large.

If anyone is in the market, Canyon has some really killer deals right now. Check out the Strive CF8:

I was checking out the sale on the Strive last week but that frame design just doesn't do it for me...something about the aesthetics of the pivot config just seems dated.

Will arrive tomorrow, so shipment was fast! Rode 12 miles locally this morning. It felt hard lol. I think I've done too much hiking over last few days!

10 days left in a 3.5 week trip to Spain with my wife. Amazing place! Maybe one day I can plan a biking trip out here. Feelin' a bit chubbers already, jamůn y vino tinto. . .

I have an SB-130LR in pieces in my garage that arrived right before I left. Invisiframe and suspension tuning and I'm a fledgling tribe member. I look at the mountains out here from the plane/train/auto and I can't wait to get back in the saddle. . .

On a side note and off-topic, if you ever get the chance to see the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, don't pass it up, my God.
