September 10-13, 2018 Weekly Ride and Trail Conditions Report

Cooling continues this week as Fall approaches. The Air Quality Index for the Bay Area doesn't look too bad on paper, but it sure seems like there is a lot of particulate in the air to me.

What's the riding plan? Photos and reports appreciated.

fyi Highway 17 roadwork Tuesday - Wednesday - Thursday

Three days of delays for Highway 17 to prepare for winter

    https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/09/...re-for-winter/

Highway 17 drivers will need to plan ahead this week as three days of maintenance work to prep for winter is sure to make the trek over the hill a slow journey.

Caltrans will begin work on Tuesday on Highway 17 between Vine Hill Road in Scotts Valley and Summit Road, closing the northbound right lane from Vine Hill to just south of Sugarloaf Road between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Then on Wednesday and Thursday, they’ll shift to the southbound side, closing the slow lane from the Santa Cruz County line to Cloud Nine Restaurant between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Electronic message signs will be posted alerting motorists of this roadwork, which consists of sign repairs, tree work, and ditch/channel cleaning which is necessary as part of the routine storm preparation.

The 10 a.m. start time Tuesday is an hour later than a tree trimming job two weeks ago which closed a northbound lane and caused an 8-mile backup during the morning commute. Drivers fear a repeat.

“Even at 11 a.m. northbound is still the commute direction,” said Dave Jones of Gilroy. “This work should have been started closer to or even after noon.”

Caltrans said the 10 a.m. start is needed to get workers off the road by 2:30 p.m.

For lane closure information on this project and for traffic updates on other Caltrans projects in Santa Cruz County, call Caltrans toll free number at 831-423-0396 or click on Caltrans, District 5 - Public Affairs - Current Press Releases and Construction Reports.

I did ok yesterday. Went up to Montebello and since it was getting dark, had to bail on Canyon and take the road back down.

    Came home to paella.

I rode the Racing Snail down the North Fork American river yesterday if that counts.... 6+ miles of gorge scrambling wore me down and tested my endurance. I ended the trip with bloody feet and fully exhausted.

I seriously wished I had worn my Fox Enduro knee guards. I slammed my knee into a rock while scrambling along the bank and drew some blood. lol

But Racing Snail had my back in the water. He weebles wobbles but he won't sink.

Got my 4 laps in today at demo. 2 of Flow and 2 of Braille, 3 climbs up sulfur springs. Braille is really fun right now, flow is covered in braking bumps top to bottom. Ride it dont slide it people!

We need to start a Demo lap club. Not many members in the 4 lap club.

    I’ve done 3 once. Never 4.

Now if we are talking about laps up U-conn, that’s another story...

My next goal is to do 6 laps, with 3 climbs up Buzzard, maybe next june 21st. That’ll put me above 10k feet for the day. Only did 5.5k yesterday but that last climb up sulfer springs was punishing

Why not do it at UC instead? Can come back to your car for food and water very frequently. And there is more than enough descents that you never have to ride the same trail twice.

could do that too. Definitely wouldnt take as long at UC, and i can bang out 5-6 laps there nonstop, so something like 10-12 laps shouldnt be too bad if i start early and have beer in the car after. i think i could "check my mail" a couple times too as that is a good 1500 feet climb back up, although i do enjoy lapping the same trail 2-3 times the same day as that's when you really get to know a trail.

Demo on the solstice would for sure be really cool although id be nervous of getting stuck out there in the dark with all the mountain lions.

I think heat would be a much greater concern. People ride UC often at night (I hear) and there's never been a mountain lion incident.
The broken are the more evolved. Rejoice.

Yep, don't worry about mountain lions. There are other dangers that are much, much more probable. Like:

    - wasps
    - crashing
    - snakes
    - albinos
    - lightning
    ....

But i'm saying i would be nervous about Demo with mountain lions around dusk. as unlikely as it may be, i'd still hate to be a statistic, and ive heard from a few reliable sources that the area is full of them.

If anything i'd be more worried about meth addicts at UC. sad but true.

So the whole Bay Area is full of mountain lions. Basically there is one in every area that that the territory can hold. Around here, that's about 1 mountain lion every 20-50 square miles. It's that way today and same as it was 1000 years ago.

What's cool is they don't harm us around here even as we roam at night and encroach on their habitat. They know that if they touch us, they're ded.

Soooo.... I know it gives us that creepy feeling but.... don't let that stop you from riding. So many more real 'dangers' for us. Bees, ticks, mosquitos, lighting, falling trees are way more likely to harm us.

The big danger happens when they run out of deer to eat. And if you're a pet living in the foothills.... sleep indoors.

A LOT of information is here and they have time delayed tracking of many local mountain lions.

Here's some of the collar'ed cougars and where they roam. Each dot is cougar and they all have ID names 4m, 5m, etc...
