    RIP Cool MTB Race

I was all set for this years race but it's not to be.

Maybe we could meet on Saturday, March 24, at 9 AM for a group ride, followed by a pot-luck. Maybe compare Strava times for bragging rights.

    Who's with me?

awwwww, that is too bad indeed.

Pretty good idea for a ride but Strava and bragging in the same sentence is not the best attraction. Should insert the words cool, beer, burritos somewhere.

Ok, where else should we promote this? Besides Sikads Cycling on Facebook, what other local riding groups are there? I can definitely spread the word in SJ. I don't have many rider contacts in the Sacramento area.

BTW, I said maybe. But I understand leading with strength: food and brews. Thanks for the feedback. It will come in handy for future promotions.

I'm in if youth sports schedules allow! This was my first race (last year) and got me hooked on racing. I was bummed when I heard it wasn't happening this year.

10 miles, 1,200 ft., no-drop ride. You can do this.

I'm in horrible shape, too. I was going to use this ride as incentive to get out and ride a little before the picnic.

christ almighty, that hit me like a ton of bricks!

i've only raced the cool event once, in the late nineties.

there was lots of mud and lots of fun.

me and my crew whipped out a bbq and cooked up tri tip on the side of the road after the race. many racers headed back to their cars looked at us with expressions of mild shock and/or amusement.

tofu-eatin' gram geeks, that's what some of 'em were.

    bless their expert-class hearts...

I am guessing because the organizer is battling cancer (Jim N.). Could be wrong.

Jim hasn't been involved for a couple of years, its been Victory Velo the last couple of years.I guess the longest active race in the west now goes to the Lemurian?

Turnout last year was poor and the organizers lost too much $ putting it on so I believe they opted not to do it this year.

Considering how much the NICA league has grown, I'm surprised that the turn out was low. Maybe NICA had an event on the same day or weekend elsewhere, tying up not only a huge young class of new racers but also their former Cool-racing parents? Just thinking aloud here.

I haven't raced anywhere in a few years - just not on the bike enough lately to feel competent. Cool was my first race in '06 - snow everywhere. Always had a good time at that event.

If I recall, last year (or year before?) A-Town Bikes took over the event and wanted to move it to Mammoth Bar. Massive blowback from the bike community for breaking tradition and changing location, and I think Victory Velo put together "The Real Cool Mt. Bike Race". Everything seemed to be done fairly last minute and on a shoestring budget. A-Town cancelled their race and the VV event was probably not all that well attended.

I do know that myself and many others WOULD go to this, but there is a NICA race in Monterey that same day. There is a lot of overlap between men and women who raced Cool "back in the day", and who are involved in NICA.
