    OT: How ‘bout them Sharks!!!

Definitely an instant classic. That game was intense! Hope Pavelski is okay!

That was probably one of the all time great hockey games. I've never seen anything like it.

Man huge respect for Couture. So many played so well, but Couture was such a catalyst and giving a bad ass interview right now! Hertl as well. They must be exhausted but on cloud nine!

Don't forget Eric Karlsson and Brent Burns....defense wins cups! LaBanc played his ass off too.

Look at how Karlsson dekes and reads the play. Unbelievable assist and goal.

And then this is history making. 4 goals on a 5 minute major in the 3rd period of game 7 of a playoff series, after being down 3-1 in the series and winning game 6 in double overtime on a short handed goal. You can't make this shit up.

i don't know diddley schnarvus about NHL hockey, but you gotta give the men in teal kudos for coming back from a 3-1 series deficit!

Awesome. I missed the game last night. Saw the 3rd and the 2 ot's periods of game 6.

Watching the links above, in order, noticed it was a 4-4 tie. Thought it must have been an exciting game, until seeing the 2nd video clip where they were down by 3 half way through the third.

Going to be interesting to get the take from of the co-workers who is a huge Sharks fan. I am, but don't follow hockey too much in the few years.

What happened to Vegas -did they get lazy and try to defend their 3 goal lead or did San Jose just come alive all of a sudden?

Any idea of the shot count -a blow out like game 6 or a bit more balanced?

Vegas was playing well and intensely. The pivotal moment was a significant injury to Pavelski that was a 5 minute major. The Sharks came out on fire after after the injury / penalty. Also important to know is a 5 minute major DOES NOT clear based upon a goal like say a powerplay due to a 2 minute minor.

I find it interesting that Vegas is complaining about the five minute penalty. Had it been them on the receiving end of the hit, they absolutely would have pitched a fit if it hadn't been called. Comparing the call the NO Saints non-call is BS.

What they should be complaining about is taking a major in the 3rd period of game 7 with a 3-0 lead, then letting in 4 goals in a 5 minute penalty kill! All they had to do was milk the lead for 7 minutes.

And if you are going to take a major, own it Ovechkin style! Complaining is an art unto itself in hockey.

I was too busy watching Dame have the game of his life to clinch a first round series over OKC to realize there was an incredible hockey game also going on.

    It was crazy.

It's fair to question the penalty (on video review there is nothing that justifies a major, though it's understandable why it was called when Pavelski was lying dazed in a pool of blood), but Vegas gave up four goals on that power play. That's all them. Pretty hard to blame it on the refs.

One thing is 100% certain, the Sharks are going to have to play much, much better to have any chance at the cup. Their face offs, break-outs/ins and forecheck all suck.

I also notice how Stahl backed off of defending him as he got closer to the net, and then took a "pee wee move" desperate stick whack attempt....new school hockey (ugh)...15 years ago Hertl would have been on his ass before he could have even set up the puck...lots of backing off of finishing checks...d is not what it used to be. And not that I want it to be all 70's and goonery, but it just seems like the fundamental has shifted...or I am just old

seemed like all three of the Rangers defenders just gave up after the pass got through to him and were just watching him go to the net. Yeah it was quick, but where was the fire in their butts for getting beat on the pass and letting him behind them in the neutral zone..

I think in a one on one with skater/goalie, the goalie usually wins. Stahl didn't want to over skate it and interfere with his own goalie, thereby causing a goal. He figured, one on one, no chance. He was wrong, it happens.

The thing that has changed in D over the years is speed. Every player today is so much faster (and better skating) than they were even 10 years ago. Power skating/stick handling has changed the game, big time. Missing a check on D has become much easier and risky due to the speed of the forwards today. I think this is why the finesse D like Karlsson, Burns, Lidstrom (back in the day), etc has emerged.

that is true about giving the goalie his space...wasn't thinking of it from that standpoint, and also definitely true about the D thing. Guys have to play "further away" from the body due to that speed for sure.

Not Sharks related, but I was actually in Boston and took a Co-Worker to his first hockey game in 2011. We saw one of, if not the, greatest starts to any hockey match ever...

You can not believe how rockin' the Garden was! My co-worker turned to me and said, "Are all hockey games like this?" I told him yes, lol!

-Apparently the NHL is removing the 2 Ref's closest to the hits on Pavs from Round #2.

1 of them has the "most post-season officiated games" to his credit. Weak-sauce move NHL!

I watched bits and pieces between Supercross.

I did see both Sharks goals, and the defense for the last couple minutes when Colorado pulled goal tender.

It's going to be hard to win a cup playing 7 game series, with Burns and Karlsson on the ice 30 minutes a game.

Holy shite, what a game last night with the return of the Cap. This team feels like its got some magic in them, could this be the year? So many disappointments in the past keeps me from getting too stoked, but I think I'm getting sucked in once again..

On another note, please lord allow KDs calf muscle to heal by game 7..

They are going to have to win in less than 6 if they have a chance at the cup. Every player on the team is likely dealing with some nagging injury at this point. Playing more games gets tougher and tougher.

Not all of us are Some of us are Sac Kings fans, which ain't easy. I don't hate the Warriors but the poor Sharks are killing it and get such little love. Listened to about 3 hours of bay area sports talk today and not a mention of the Sharks game tonight.

They should just make (almost) everything reviewable with a steep enough penalty to discourage teams from spamming the review, such as having a powerplay against you if you lose a challenge (I think they do this already for one type of challenge, but I can't remember which). Obviously it would slow the game down and I can see debates for limiting what can be reviewed, but I feel like so many mess-ups from refs end up ruining seasons when you could just allow for a review and allow teams to win with minimal controversy. And yes I know that reffing errors are part of the game and most of it evens out but still.

Also, does it make a difference that the puck actually hit Timo's stick before deflecting and getting scored? Because if you watch the replay the puck actually hits his stick right after the hand-pass, then it deflects and is scored. So that may negate all of this controversy anyways.

^^^ Hand passes are only allowed in the defensive zone. It's debatable if that was actually a hand pass as he never really caught it or intentionally directed it. More importantly, it looks as if the puck hit one of the Blues players after the 'hand pass.' If it did, then there is no stoppage of play.

I have no debate about whether or not a hand pass is legal, my debate is that if you watch the review here, the puck looks like it hit Timo's stick. See this vid at 12:52 with the video speed set to the slowest, one view I swore it hit the stick but reviewing it again I am unsure about that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA1ciolCfD4

I'm guessing its still considered a hand pass since he would have touched it then hit it. Some other sources on the internetz are suggesting that even if the puck deflected off of someone else, any handpass that alters the outcome of a game should result in the play being blown dead. This one is tricky for sure but it looks like the Sharks got a good advantage here, of course so did the blues in other spots too but this one directly ended the game.

Edit: watched the video again and it looks like it never touches his stick, I swore one video showed it close up and looked like it grazed the stick and the stick vibrated, but after watching these again and again it looks like it directly bypassed his stick.

Edit again: by “good advantage” I mean a big advantage from a bad call, I think Blues fans have a right to be angry here.

Yeah it's hard to tell. One of my good friends played in the NHL, I will ask his opinion tomorrow.

And how many times have bad calls gone against the Sharks? This is the same discussion over and over across all Major League sports. Sometime you are on the benefiting end, and sometime you are on the receiving end of the stick. As long as we have humans ref'ing the games, this will always be part of it unless we just flat out have ANY score must be reviewed with a 1-2 min window before the score. And even that is not a guarantee of the right call aka look at the NFL.

How much as fans are we willing to tolerate? Increased reviews increases game time, so it is a balance for sure. Regardless...

    HELLS YEAH GO SHARKS!!!!

P.S. it sucks trying to watch the games live in Switzerland. I have to VPN to San Francisco, sign into Youtube TV then launch the NBCSports app to see it live. Oh and it is 4AM here. Ughhh!

Being a diehard Hawks fan for 25 years now, I am rooting for SJ against the cesspool that is STL.

I also adopted the Hurricanes when I moved to Raleigh 6 years ago. I’d love a Canes/Sharks final. Would be a very fast and entertaining series. Unfortunately it looks like that little @$$hole Marchand will be headed to the final instead

Carolina definitely came back down to earth this series. And Rask has been a monster. Good thing I didn’t spend money on tickets for game 4. Haha

-To me, that was a Bat-Down and the eventual scorer was BEHIND the Goal-Line when the Bat-Down occurred. A Hand-Pass is called when the puck is directed AT a teammate and that simply did not happen.

That’s not “fun”. That’s an embarrassment. Avery was a goon. So is Marchand. There’s a difference between physical play and being a dirty player. Not to mention his off ice BS “interviews”. He’s a douche.

True, but that’s their job. A big part of hockey is the mental game. Sidney Crosby said it best, ‘My job is to score goals, if the antagonizers get into my head then I’m not doing my job.’

Funny to see guys without a helmet.

If you had to choose would you rather play hockey or ride DH without one?

With the speed of wrist and slap shots today, you could be killed easily without a helmet on. People don't realize the pain endured blocking shots in NHL!

I'm surprised that players don't cover up their faces better. Puck to the jaw is no joke, seen a couple recently. Friggin' ouch!

Yeah, there is no way I'd stand in front of the net in an NHL game even with a full cage and two sets of pads on!

The shot on Eaves at 4:17 could have been fatal without a helmet on.

Been a sharks fan for years. Yeah they caught a break in the call but they worked their ass off to get back in the game and get the win.

And, a different take from the NHL rulebook on hand passes.

67.1 Handling Puck - A player shall be permitted to stop or “bat” a puck in the air with his open hand, or push it along the ice with his hand, and the play shall not be stopped unless, in the opinion of the Referee, he has deliberately directed the puck to a teammate in any zone other than the defending zone, in which case the play shall be stopped and a face-off conducted (see Rule 79 – Hand Pass). Play will not be stopped for any hand pass by players in their own defending zone.

Basically if the puck is batted down it's ok. It's only an issue if the puck is directed to another player. Meier batted the puck towards his stick but was taken out of the play. Nyquist skated towards the puck and passed it to Karlsson for the goal.

Everytime in my hockey “career” that I’ve gone with just a visor instead of full cage, I’ve caught a stick or puck in the eyes/mouth/chin. Never again

back in college, I played goalie in intramurals at Ohio State....after that, the club guys would come out and play, and always be looking for a goalie. I ended up in one of those games, and a guy who had played for the Hartford Whalers was on our team. During warm ups, he took a slap shot at me from about 10 feet away. I had reeaalllly crappy old 80's goalie gear on, and that puck hit me on the elbow right between the "pads".. My whole arm went numb, and I dropped the stick. I could feel bones crunching around underneath everything. He was like "why did you get in front of that?"...I was like,"isn't that my job?"

I ended up playing that whole game with the shattered elbow parts b/c I could not believe who I was playing with....they had asked me, the humble intramural guy, to play with them. The team consisted of the varsity coaching staff (that is why the Whalers guy was there), a few varsity alums, and a few professors from Canada. Funny thing is, when they asked me to play, I told them that I sucked, and Coach Markell said "we won't let any pucks get to ya"....and they were pretty much right

to this day, my right elbow still crunches when I move it

Here's a photo I took a couple years ago at a Sharks game. During warmup a slap shot shattered the glass like a gun shot.

    OT: How ‘bout them Sharks!!!

Sharks have scored on themselves twice. What’s up with these stupid TV hockey names the commentators are using? Just add an “e” to the end of every name?

Yup. And I vaguely remember (in more recent years) a young female Columbus fan getting a puck to the face, which sparked further changes. I want to say that made the league extend the netting further around the corners?

Can you imagine no netting now? All the “fans “ on their phones the entire game would be in trouble. Haha

EDIT: I just googled it. I didn’t realize she died from the incident. But that was 2002.
