    Northstar to Tahoe City recommendations

Or Northstar to Carnelian Bay, which ever is better. Headed to Tahoe second week of July and our group is looking for a good ride to the lake. Staying at Northstar, anyone have a recommendation? Can go either to Tahoe City or Carnelian Bay. Thanks in advance!

Itís been a long time since Iíve gone from Northstar towards the lake but I think the best way is Highlands to Sawmill Flat. Thatíll run into the Tahoe Rim Trail. Then, Iíd go right up to Watson Lake and follow the TRT to Tahoe City. Thereís good views past Watson Lake and itís got more bang for your buck. If you go left on the TRT you can take Dirks or Pick Up Sticks etc to Carnelian but this would be shorter.

Many different ways......I like to hit Painted Rock (TRT) to Missing Link...I think it's Road 501 sneaks around the peak of Mt. Pluto to get you there, or the new Thunder Cliffs section is good and longer but not as technical....many other ways down that you can find if you look hard enough....

Upper Big Chief is really fun. The bottom of UBC is the 06 and you can climb back up and grab the TRT at Watson Lake or at Fire and Ice then and head to CB or TC.

Is it worth it? That depends on what kind of shape youíre in and how much work youíre willing to do.

Had a really fun ride last summer, dropping all of Big Chief, climbing back up 06, then dropping Fire & Ice and the rest of the Rim Trail down to Tahoe City.

Those sections of the Rim Trail down to Tahoe City were so fun. Been so long since I've done it, and most often I've climbed it.

And of course, you can end your ride at the Bridgetender or Tahoe Tap Haus.

Another question: how well marked are the trails around the area? Is it easy to navigate? Or should I prepare to navigate by GPS (phone)?

You should plan on navigating by GPS. The trails are typically marked (kind of) but if I recall, they are not marked by their trial name. But honestly, I can't remember. I usually just use trailforks.

Bring your GPS. Some trails are well marked but other trails have no signage at all.

Don't rely on marking, the snow or something (or someone) seems to destroy anything I put out.....
