    NorCal Rigs that Tacomas Envy

Lot's of great Tacoma discussion around NorCal, but I don't drive a Tacoma! Let's talk about our NorCal non-Tacoma rigs.

I'm daily driving a Tahoe, that currently looks like this.....

    NorCal Rigs that Tacomas Envy-img_0612.jpg

Need to add racks (bike and surf), and maybe lift 3 inches with skid plates, recovery hooks.

I'm slowly transitioning over from my old MTB/Surf/Ski Infiniti QX4 beater. Bought this car new in 2002 and it has seen lots of MTB miles, and is stuffed full of helmets, tools, parts, etc. Sentimental value in this one, but time to let it go.

My friends shuttle rig. Decently clean Corolla he got for less than $1k. Drive it until it breaks, then sell it to a scrap yard and probably get most that money back.

^^^When I was in college I had a Mazda B2000 that I built from a salvage title. It was a mutt of a truck, but put in many MTB miles in Pisgah. Good times. I wish I had a picture of it. I was probably all in about $1000 on that one too.

That is so great love the back seat! - u should get a little tiny Dakine or Race Face pad you can hang out the window

And definitely the strong leader in the bikevalue:shuttlevalue ratio contest - probably about 20:1 or so? Can anyone beat that ?(no trailers allowed )

In a barn on a ranch I was visiting. Very low original miles as it was only used on the ranch.

Back in the late 80's, I bought an 82 Accord with a 5 speed and 150k miles on it for $900 and used that as my DD and bike hauler for a number of years (until it reached about 250k). When most of the body rusted away and the interior stunk too much to be roadworthy, I eventually traded it in and got $25 for it. Still one of the best bike rigs I've ever owned.

Another cool rig, my uncle had a 1969 when I was a kid.

My neighbor around the block has two of these. Both restored and one is identical in paint and graphics as this orange one restored to original. Not sure if itís a diesel or not. Now Iím intrigued. His other one is restored only a bit custom done up in black / lifted with big tires.

And then thereís this one. Coincidentally I spotted this sweet original 69íish Toy Landcruiser just last night. I looked close and Iím pretty sure itís original paint graphics and interior.

Good catch and correct. If it were a 1979 it would look like an OJ Simpson Bronco.

This is from the movie, Stripes.

As for the original GMC Motor Home, they have a cult following. They were a great motor home, but now that they are 40 years old, they would require essentially a complete restoration ($$$$!!!) in order to be reliable at all.

As an aside, this was built on a GMC MH chassis:

Is that a new Baja? I don't understand the car/truckbed machines... or does it just look low and it's actually truck clearance? Does it drive itself?

Every time I get in this car, it makes sense. Glass, hid headlights, turbo wipers, low and cannot get itself in trouble.

Btw, two kids at his school bumped his car already. Parents both wrote me $500 checks to avoid insurance.

Every time I get in this car, it makes sense. Glass, hid headlights, turbo wipers, low and cannot get itself in trouble.

Btw, two kids at his school bumped his car already. Parents both wrote me $500 checks to avoid insurance.
Nothing better than bringing something back to life. You know you're doing it right when an oil change is a significant percentage of the car's value. My son will inherit my old QX4 beater wagon, much buffing, plastidipping needed.

And if you donít want the flat look, they make a glossifier to go over it for the blinging look.

I'll play. This was my 93 Mazda Protege that I picked up for $1100 on Craigslist. If was a sun-baked city car with less than 70K miles. Just needed tires, oil-change, a battery and a good buff-out and I got 5 more years and another 70K miles before selling on Criagslist for about what I bought it for.

With the rooftop Yakima I could carry 4 bikes on top and 4 riders inside. This picture was from a Downieville trip where we often used it for shuttle runs. Could easily have added hitch rack to carry extra bikes but would have quickly run out of passenger space

Ironically it was ultimately replaced with a Taco

That paint job is white with blue pearl in the clear coat. I had a ride painted up like that years ago.

Pearl white is different. It looks like a satin pearlescent white. Many newer Cadillacís came from the factory as Pearl White.

Iím amazed at the brake pad life considering the weight of the vehicle. Must have some very think pads to compensate.

I'll tell ya what... The factory engineers know what they are doing. When we go with aftermarket "improvements", we generally take a step backwards. I mean, the factory has to carry a warranty and they don't want a shitload of bad press on their cars. These aftermarket companies don't.

The rotors mic'd out within spec, so I scuffed them down to break the glaze and put new pads in place.

And lastly, the original "street race" menace.

1987 Mustang GT - Keith Craft 351W, Vortech S-Trim, Edelbrock Vic Jr. heads, Art Carr built auto trans, 1000hp Aeromotive fuel system, rear locker, blah blah. Used to run low 11s with the old 306cid engine. Never ran with the bigger engine and more boost.

Me too! I sucked at it though. I always had automatics with big stall converters (except the C5 but it had slippery OEM runflat tires). So everyone would laugh when I tried to hammer it out of corners. The real racers would also ask me later "You're a drag racer huh?". LOL

Nice rides JC. Those Fox body Mustangs really have a HUGE following. Yours sounds like it was a beast. And that Vette, autocross would be a blast. Iíve never done it but always thought it would be serious fun. And sweet TA as well another fun car. Iíve got some history racing against a Fox body Mustang and that gen TA. Good memories.

Thanks buddy! They were all fun vehicles. Racing was pretty much my life from 1992 to 2005. I started drooling over your Judge because I had a clapped out 1972 Chevelle with a beat down 350cid and a throttle that stuck. I think it was slower than my '87 Grand Wagoneer. That was my only foray into classics but I admired them despite my experience with the faded orange "great pumpkin" paint. lol

This is a very serious thread, and I'm hardly strictly serious about this.

Tacoma's can envy my fuel efficiency 30MPG to and from Tahoe and Downieville, 32 to and from the Bay Area.

This is no rock crawler, lets call it what it is, an "AWD" (and that is generous, ha), on a car chassis. I had to "get real" about how I was going to use my next vehicle, and this was the best solution.

It's been on forest roads in Canada, Oregon and the Sierra.

I wish it was bigger sometimes, but that is the trade-off. It's amazing what you can do with good tires and a bit of clearance.

I agree 100% tires and clearance are a HUGE deal.

Yeah mine wasnít a Judge. It was one better with the Ram Air IV motor. Very few of the Judges had that motor. Custom painted in black with blue pearl. I liked the Judge carrousel red / orange color though. Same color as Chevyís Hugger Orange. Mine originally was called Espresso Brown. I dropped a video in the Taco thread for ya of that color and the sound of a Ram Air IV.

I may as well add it in here.

    My old Goat ^

The original color mine was and the sound that a Ram Air IV motor makes from the factory.

Rare because they only made 759 GTOís in 1969 with a Ram Air IV motor and only 51 of those were painted in Espresso Brown.

There were 72,287 GTOís produced in 1969. So you can see the rarity of that car today. How many Ram Air IV cars survived. And how many of the espresso brown color Ram Air IV cars survived.

Funny how I wasnít crazy about the Espresso Brown color back when I had it but now I think itís a pretty sweet color.

This thing seems like the perfect Santa Cruz Rig. Can store both the surfboard and wetsuit at the same time as bike and gear. No real conversion done to the inside, just a couple extra seats and a lot of room for changing and storage.

    Thanks!

But if I cut out all the plastic parts that hit I will literally do 10's of dollars of damage to my truck!
