Not sure exactly which (of several) trails you're reffering to, but here's a couple of interesting reports:
Ride from Serene Lakes (aka Ice Lakes; Sugar Bowl area) to Michigan Bluff (not quite Auburn):

Yep , done it twice,, riding a horse. It's call the Western States 100 or "Tevis". Toughest dogon horse race in the country. Ya get 24 hours to finish it, took me about 21. There are some awesome sections of single track on it but most are closed to bikes. I think it may be legal to ride on the section between Michigan Bluff and Deadwood and possibly Deadwood to Robinson Flat but that's about it. Too bad,, great trails out there.
