The most Norcal of Enduro dates announced....

It doesn't get much more NorCal that this. Those of us who checked it out last year probably saw this on IG, but here is a bit of initial info for one of my favorite events in its sophomore incarnation:

    https://humboldtenduro.com/

Hosted by Mad River Burpery in Blue Lake CA just past Arcata. An easy drive from the SFBA. I even picked up a trimmigrant hitchhiker last year in Mendo.

Expect 4 stages of steep, raw, hand built single track twisting through Redwoods above the Mad River.

Most fun mtb race I’ve ever done. Hopefully we can get a little rain before this years event to truly experience the Humboldt loam.

I know some real scary hillbangers, but I can guarantee you that there are no grow ops on this hill. All-around great time. You miss it - you lose.

Yes, but I'm not too happy about the extra competition. Just how 'old' do you think Old is?

Oh cool - I was just firing off random replies - I didn't even realize it was you. Are you bringing any Locos? As an honorary sticker-holder in the grandpa division, it would be an honor to meet some dads.

They may not be as techy as all the clapped out bike park enduros in NorCal, but they are steep, loamy, and fun.

Steep and Loamy. Throw in all kinds of big undulations and tons of roots for good measure. Some of the best trails I've ridden in CA. Very much worth the drive.

Undulations is a good descriptor - not quite jumps but definitely steep and flowwwy in spots and nearly all under a cool shady redwood canopy. If they do camping in the farmer's field again, it's a short ride to either the race venue or the brewery depending on which way you go.

Gotcha. You will need to talk to RCMBA cuz these trail aren't open to the public AFAIK. They have permits from the logging company to build and ride and throw this race weekend. Someone here will know the deal.

I'm 49, so I've always classified myself as semi-geriatric. I won't get my AARP card for a few years.

Hah, when I age up, I always like the first year being a young 'un and picking on the old men in the category. Its about the only time I'm competitive. You're safe this year.

Joining the RCMBA Chapter ($5) will allow you to ride the trails under their agreement.

I used to think that too, but the a lot of the old men still doing this are the worst! Especially in the DH scene - a lot of these geezers are leathery old SoCal ex-pro MX racers with nothing but money for the finest machinery and time to devote to training and kicking my ass. I can only hope they have a mechanical.

It's $35 to join RCMBA. If you post here or on the facebook page when you are coming, I or someone else would be more than happy to show you guys around! All the trails are constantly getting updated. There is already a new trail that has been added off of Woodrat called Gnome of Love. We are also working on putting in a climbing trail up to the top. It would be two way and would be blue square downhill.

At 63, I have the consolation that I really shouldn't beat anybody, so can savor whatever small victories come my way.
